CAF conducted the draw for the 2021 Totalenergy Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday in Yaounde. The 24 qualified teams, allocated in four pots based on their August FIFA ranking, were drawn into six groups of four teams each. Host Cameroon was automatically the top seed in Group A despite being the 8th-ranked team in Africa.
There were no more than two teams from the same Africa region in any one pot and no more than one nation from any other continental confederation.
After playing each team in their group, the top two teams advance to the knockout stage. Teams listed in the order they were drawn, with their August FIFA ranking.
Host Cameroon was handed a favorable draw for January’s Africa Cup of Nations with Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, and Cape Verde in Group A while the heavyweights Egypt and Nigeria will face off in Group D alongside Sudan and Guinea-Bissau
The buildup to the tournament, which begins on 9 January, has been dominated by doubts over where it will be staged as many pundits felt Cameroon was not ready.
Elsewhere, the favorites Morocco were drawn in Group C and will face Ghana, debutant Comoros, and Gabon, while Senegal and Zimbabwe – ranked first and twenty-fourth in Africa by Fifa – will contest Group B with Guinea and Malawi.
Ivory Coast hopes of winning the title for the third time will rest of coming through a group that contains title holders Algeria, Equatorial Guinea, and Sierra Leone.
