The Blue Sharks of Cape Verde have beaten Cameroon’s Indomitable lions 3#1, to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2022 AFCON alive.
Cape Verde came into the game on Friday afternoon at the Estadio Nacional in praia, ranked third in group F, behind Cameroon and Rwanda. Despite the heavy winds in praia which made it difficult for both sides to fully present their game plan, it was the Indomitable lions who took an early lead at the 14 minutes, from a well struck free kick from Mainz Midfielder, Pierre Kunde Malong.
10 minutes later , Kuca levelled scores for the home side, hammering home a dead ball, following a Cape Verde corner kick.
The remainder of the first segment offered little to write home about, as both sides returned to the dressing room tight one goal apiece.
Upon resumption for the second segment, the Blue Sharks looked promising, and exploited the défensive lapses from Cameroon, to near perfection. At the 59th minute, Macky Bagnack turned in a cross from the Cape Veridian forwards to beat his own Goalkeeper, Fabrice Ondoa, as the Blue Sharks went in front.
There was certainly more drama. As Cameroon searched for the much needed Equalizer, the Blue Sharks resorted to counter attacks, and Ryan Mendes extended Cape Verde’s lead at the 69th minute.
Anthonio Conceiçao brought in Clinton Njie, Martin Hongla and later Ako Assomo, in an attempt to salvage situations, but all their efforts yielded no fruits.
Cameroon has therefore suffered their first defeat of the Conceiçao era.
On September 08, 2012, Cape Verde defeated Cameroon 2#0 at the same Estadio Nacional, to stop the lions from taking part in the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.
The win means Cape Verde moves up to second in group F, with seven points, ahead of their last group game against Mozambique.
