Cape Verde makes historic win on opener

The 30th edition of the Afrobasket Men’s Basketball continental championship of Africa was open in Rwanda on the 24th of August 2021


The first game of the tournament was filled with a lot of excitement with current champions of the 29th edition Tunisia proven its supremacy Guinea as Champions of the continent tournament organized by FIBA.

The Champions Tunisia dominated all four quarters with an excellent victory and welcomed Guinea in a fine style. The first quarter ended with 17 – 9 and at the break, it was 41 for the Champions and 20 for Guinea

The third-quarter display was a little encouraging for the visitors but was not got enough to give them a win as Tunisia overpowered them 21 – 14 to close the third quart with 62 – 34. The game ended with Tunisia eyeing the next round with 82 – 46 in Group B

The second game in group B saw three times champions Egypt crush the Central African Republic 56 – 72. Egypt got the win in the first two quarters 9 – 13 and 16 – 20. The central African Republic tried to make a comeback in the third quarter with a win 18 – 17 but could not make it through in the fourth quarter as they lost yet again 13 – 22.


Host Rwanda started its campaign with a good start against DR Congo 82 – 68. The first quarter was easy for the host after picking 24 baskets as against 15 for DR Congo but the second quarter proved much better for DR Congo as both separated with 19 – 19 baskets. DR Congo came back into the game in the third quarter with a brilliant display and got a win 14 – 21 to reduce the gap with a difference of 2 baskets but could not hold on for last quarter has the host seal their first victory of the campaign with a comfortable fourth-quarter win 25 – 23

Cape Verde made a headline in their opener in group A in overtime to frustrate 11-times champions Angola 77 – 71. Angola starts the first quarter at a slow pace with a draw 14 – 14 but game back in the second quarter in style to kill Cape Verde’s hope of getting a win with 20 – 12 baskets. The third quarter proved Cape Verde met business with a wine 21 – 23. The battle was left for the fourth quarter to be decided and Cape Verde made it level at 66 – 66 to take the game to overtime at the end of regulation before they pulled away in the remaining five minutes for the historic win 71 – 77
