Vietnam strike gold in SEA Games 2019 women’s football after extra time winner against Thailand

Published

on

Vietnam have claimed gold in women’s football of SEA Games 2019 after defeating Thailand 1-0 in extra time at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila, Philippines on Sunday.

The Golden Girls are now the most successful nation in women’s football tournament of SEA Games after winning their sixth yellow metal surpassing Thailand who they pipped in the 2017 SEA Games held in Malaysia as well.

It was a repeat of the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 final in Manila on Sunday as ASEAN heavyweights Vietnam and Thailand clashed against each other for the Southeast Asian Games title and just like how things panned out in Chonburi earlier this year, Vietnam had to wait until the extra time to find the winning goal.

It was Pham Hai Yen who was the hero for Mai Duc Chung’s team this time around heading home the winner in third minute of extra time which put them at the top of the podium in the women’s tournament.

Meanwhile, Myanmar claimed the bronze medal in the tournament defeating hosts Philippine 2-1 in the bronze medal match held earlier in the day.

Quinley Quezada had given the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute, but goals form July Kyaw and Yee Yee Oo in the 78th and 80th minutes gave Myanmar a comeback victory over the Malditas.

Malaysia one of our biggest challenges in 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, says Vietnam boss Park Hang-seo

Published

on

Vietnam head coach Park Hang-seo has returned to work with the Golden Dragons as he begins preparations for their crucial 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers tie next month.

The ASEAN champions are set to face Malaysia in their next 2022 World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup Joint-Qualifiers second round tie at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on March 31.

The national team will come together on March 21 and will play Kyrgyz Republic in an international friendly match on March 26 as they get ready for the all-important tie against the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup finalists

Nguyen Tien Linh breaks deadlock for Vietnam against DPR Korea

Vietnam are currently topping Group G of the World Cup Qualifiers with 11 points from five matches followed by Harimau Malaya with nine and Thailand with eight points. UAE are also close on their heels with six points from four games.

And Park, who recently returned from Korea Republic after a short vacation, has opined that the game against Malaysia will be one of their biggest challenges in the qualification event yet.

“Next, the national team will face Malaysia, trailing us by only two points in Group G. Malaysia are our biggest challenge besides the away game in United Arab Emirates (UAE). We can advance if we top the group,” the South Korean tactician was quoted as saying.

After the Malaysia encounter next month, Vietnam will only have two qualifiers ties left to play — against Indonesia and UAE on June 4 and 9 respectively.

“It’s too soon for me to comment whether Vietnam will advance to the next round of the qualifiers” the coach warned.

Park also confirmed that he had signed a new contract with Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) at the start of this month.

“I signed a new deal with VFF on February 1. It’s different from before, since the team is now 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup holders and 2019 SEA Games gold medalists. It’s time for us to regain our motivation, and if needed, make necessary changes,” he said.

Maldives’ Maziya win play-offs on penalties to deny Bengaluru FC place in AFC Cup 2020

Published

on

India’s Bengaluru FC will not feature in AFC Cup 2020 after they lost their play-off clash against Maldives’ Maziya Recreation and Sports Club on penalties at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

The group stage berth was decided in a penalty shootout after there was nothing to separate the two sides after two legs in the South Asia Zone play-off. And it was the club from Maldives who nicked it 4-3 on penalties after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate at the end of extra time.

Bengaluru had thrashed Bhutan Premier League champions Paro FC 10-1 over two legs in the Preliminary Round 2 of the AFC Cup qualifiers to reach the play-offs while Maziya had progressed on away goals after holding Bangladesh’s Abahani Limited Dhaka 2-2.

In the first leg of the play-off at the National Football Stadium in Male, Maziya had defeated Bengaluru 2-1 with Ibrahim Mahudhee and Cornelius Stewart scoring to give the Maldives side the advantage and Nili scoring the away goal for the ISL side.

After a goalless first half, it was Jamaica international forward Deshorn Brown who scored Bengaluru’s opener in the 58th minute after Suresh Wangjam had made a good run along the left flank before teeing up the forward to level the aggregate score at 2-2.

However, the visiting Maziya scored through Ibrahim Waheed Hassan in the 73rd minute to take a 3-2 lead in the tie, but veteran Indian striker Sunil Chhetri made it 3-3 on aggregate five minutes later to force extra time.

Maziya once again scored in the enemy territory through Stewart in the 103rd minute only for Blues skipper Chhetri to score his second of the night and take the game into penalties which was ultimately won by the visitors.

The 2019 Dhivehi Premier League runners-up will now join I-League champions Chennai City FC, Maldives’ TC Sports Club and Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings in Group E of AFC Cup 2020.

AFC Cup 2020: PSM Makassar notch first win after defeating Shan United

Published

on

PSM Makassar got off the mark in AFC Cup 2020 on Wednesday after beating Shan United 3-1 at the Gelora Bung Karno Madya Stadium to claim their first points in Group H.

After suffering defeats on Match Day 1 a fortnight ago, both teams headed into the clash aware of how crucial it was to avoid a second consecutive defeat – which would leave either rooted to the bottom of the table.

Highlights – PSM Makassar vs Shan United

Just three minutes after kickoff, the hosts got off to a dream start as Asnawi Bahari created space for himself down the right before hanging an excellent ball up inside the area, where the 1.95-metre tall Giancarlo was somehow left unmarked to head home.

Seven minutes into the second half, PSM doubled their advantage when Leo Guntara embarked on an enterprising run down the left before his low cross found Yakob Sayuri, who duly dispatched an emphatic left-footed drive past Thiha Sithu in off the underside of the bar.

Shan did manage to pull one back with 12 minutes remaining courtesy of a Htet Phyo Wai effort, as the midfielder pounced on a loose ball 25 yards out from goal and unleashed a 30-yard drive that was fairly central but somehow fumbled into goal by opposition goalkeeper Miswar Saputra.

But, in the fourth minute of injury time and with the final kick of the game, PSM secured the win as Yakob broke free down the right-side of the area before swinging in an inch-perfect cross for Ferdinand Sinaga to volley home at the back post and ensure PSM – who reached the ASEAN Zone semi-finals last year – got up and running.

PSM MAKASSAR: Miswar Saputra, Asnawi Bahar, Rizky Pellu, Hussein El Dor, Leo Guntara (Roni Beroperay 64’), Yakob Sayuri, Dedy Gusmawan, Ahmad Agung, Bayu Gatra (Rizky Eka Pratama 83’), Giancarlo, Osas Saha (Ferdinand Sinaga 75’).

SHAN UNITED: Thiha Sithu, Hein Phyo Win, Nyein Chan, Ye Min Thu (Tluanghup Thang 74’), Daniel Tagoe, Hein Thiha Zaw, Pyae Sone Aung (Htet Phyo Wai 24’), Yan Naing Oo (Sa Aung Pyae Ko 57’), Djawa Maximin, Nanda Kyaw, Yakubu Abubakar.
