Borussia Dortmund CEO Watzke: German football facing its biggest ever crisis

Published

The Bundesliga is set to be postponed until April due to coronavirus, but Hans-Joachim Watzke feels “other approaches” could have been used.

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke believes German football is facing “the greatest crisis in its history” as it attempts to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

The German Football League (DFL) confirmed on Friday that all Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga matches have been cancelled until at least April 2.

That followed an earlier announcement that games would go ahead as planned behind closed doors this weekend, leading to criticism from Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara.

Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge defended the DFL’s initial decision to play one more round of fixtures, warning of the impact to smaller clubs if the season ended prematurely.

And Watzke agrees “other approaches” should have been taken, with clubs set to meet on Monday to discuss further postponements

“The Presidium of the DFL has made a decision that needs to be respected – regardless of the fact that there would have been other approaches,” he said in a club statement.

“We all have to do this together in solidarity and discuss the corresponding derivations on Monday.

“Nevertheless, it also applies – depending on what will be decided on Monday – that German professional football is in the greatest crisis in its history.

“It is to be hoped that the Bundesliga clubs have built up so much substance in recent years that everyone will survive this crisis.

“An existential threat to Borussia Dortmund can be excluded according to everything we can assess today.”

Dortmund, who were due to face bitter rivals Schalke on Saturday, are second in the Bundesliga and four points adrift of leaders Bayern.

Bundesliga: Leroy Sane Returns Home And Signs A 5 Years Deal With Bayern Munich

Leroy Sane'

The German international Leroy Sane returns home and signed 5 years deal with the Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich this Friday 3 July 2020 after a contract talks between him and the management of Manchester city failed to push through

According to Sky Sports and the BBC, the Bundesliga champions did not give the transfer fee, Bayern and City agreed on a fee of £54.8 million. But German daily Bild claim the fee is around 50 million euros.

The 24-year-old spent four years at City, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups, and two Community Shields, but European success eluded him.

His transfer became an open secret as Guardiola revealed earlier this week that Sane was likely to leave after rejecting a new contract offer with a year left on his existing deal at City.

Sane scored 39 goals in 135 appearances in all competitions for City after joining from Bundesliga club Schalke in 2016.

His arrival on Wednesday in Bavaria was much hyped with reporters at Munich airport using smartphones to film the landing of a private jet from England before Sane was whisked away for his medical.

Leroy Sane now targeted Champions League glory with Bayern Munich after joining the Bundesliga giants from Manchester City

It should be noted that He is not eligible to feature in this Saturday’s German Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen in Berlin but will start preparing for the 2020/21 season next week, the club has said.

Sane has 21 caps and five goals for Germany but was a shock omission from the squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia when the holders bowed out in the group stage.

Sane is Bayern’s third new signing for next season alongside French teenage defender Tanguy Nianzou Kouassi from Paris Saint-Germain and goalkeeper Alexander Nuebel from Schalke, both of which were free transfers.

Substitutes, staff members as well as members of the club delegations in the stands are no longer required to wear the mask, “on condition of respecting a distance of 1.5 meters between people” .

The new rules come into force this weekend and concern the Bundesliga, the Second and the Third Division as well as the Women’s Championship and the German Cup finals.
