April too soon for Serie A restart says FIGC president Gravina

Published

on

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina insisted Serie A would not automatically resume when the Italian government lifts its restrictions.

All options for finishing the Serie A season remain on the table but an immediate restart when lockdown conditions end next month is unrealistic, according to Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina.

The Italian government has banned all public gatherings until April 3 in an attempt to curb the spread of coronavirus, which has hit the country hard.

Recent figures show almost 25,000 confirmed cases and 1,809 deaths.

Serie A has been put on hold amid the pandemic and football officials are considering every available avenue for concluding the league campaign.

That could include crowning champions based on results across a two-season period, using a play-off system or even not awarding the Scudetto, Gravina says.

“I cannot rule out anything,” he told Radio Anch’io Sport.

“We must try to plan with the most optimistic idea: that is, to bring the championship to a close. Among the various hypotheses, I have also announced the possibility of not assigning the title, freezing the earnings or using play-offs.

“If it is not possible to complete the championship, we will take other decisions. It is not excluded that today’s championship can be balanced over two different seasons.

“I understand that there is so much curiosity, so much attention in wanting to define the final end points in the best possible way, but nobody today is able to say what our future will be.”

“We are sailing by sight in an atmosphere of absolute fog,” he added.

“We have the [government mandates] that lead us to April 3, but it is too close a date to think of an immediate restart of all activities, not just sports.

“For this reason, I spoke of the beginning of May. Even though this is also an entirely theoretical reference date, we have to give ourselves references otherwise we risk finding ourselves unprepared.”

Gravina will ask UEFA to postpone Euro 2020 when a stakeholder meeting involving key federation, league and club representatives takes place on Tuesday.

Serie A entered hiatus with defending champions Juventus holding a one-point lead over Lazio at the top of the table.

The Championship Can Resume On June 20 – Italian Sport Minister

The green light has been given for Italy’s Serie A football championship to begin on June 20.

Published

on

The Italian Minsiter of sports on Thursday May 28 said, the government’s Technical and Scientific Committee (CTS) had agreed to the health protocol proposed by Italian football chiefs.

“Italy has started to return to normal life again, it is only right that football should do the same. The federation assured me that it had a Plan B and a Plan C. In light of these considerations, the championship can resume on June 20,” Spadafora said.

He added that, “The CTS agreed with the medical protocol, but confirmed the absolute necessity for a quarantine period if a player were to test positive.”

In a video conference, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) President Gabriele Gravina said, there would be a play-off system if the championship were again interrupted, while the existing standings would be used if it were stopped.
I’m happy and satisfied. The restart of football represents a message of hope for the whole country,” Gravina said.
Being one of the hardest hit countries by the coronavirus pandemic with over 33,000 deaths, Italy begun to ease restrictions. No top-flight matches in Italy have been played since Sassuolo beat Brescia 3-0 on March 9. Italian football now faces a scheduling nightmare, for matches, which will take place behind closed doors.

Italians clubs on Friday May 29 meet to examine the possibility of playing the remaining Serie A and Italian Cup matches, amounting to some 127 in total. Most teams have 12 league games left to play, but there were four postponed fixtures.

Coronavirus: Dybala feeling ‘much better’ after suffering with COVID-19

Published

on

Juventus star Paulo Dybala has confirmed he suffered with strong symptoms of coronavirus, but is now recovering.

Paulo Dybala is feeling “much better” after experiencing strong symptoms of coronavirus over the past week.

Dybala confirmed on March 21 that he and his girlfriend Oriana Sabatini had tested positive for the virus, which has caused the postponement of sport across the globe.

The Argentine international said that both he and Sabatini were feeling fine, though – in a video call posted to Juve’s official Twitter account – Dybala has revealed he subsequently came down with strong symptoms.

“I feel good, much better in fact, after having had some strong symptoms for a couple of days,” Dybala said.

“Today I feel much better, without any symptoms and I can move much better, so I will try to train again.

“After having attempted to in the days where the symptoms were strong, I felt uncomfortable very quickly and I couldn’t get any air so I couldn’t do anything.

“After about five minutes I felt really tired and my body felt heavy, my muscles hurt and I had to stop.

“But luckily both me and my girlfriend feel much better now.”

Dybala was the third Juve player to test positive for COVID-19, after Daniele Rugani – who was the first Serie A player to be diagnosed with the illness – and Blaise Matuidi.

COVID-19 has taken hold in Italy over the course of the past month, where there have been 86,498 confirmed cases and 9,134 deaths.

Reports: Pogba to Juventus, Dybala or Pjanic to Man Utd

Published

on

Manchester United could be set to gain a Juventus star if Paul Pogba returns to Turin.

Juventus may be able to bring Paul Pogba back to Turin, but it could cost them a star.

Pogba, 27, has been linked with a move away from Manchester United, having returned to Old Trafford in 2016.

But the Serie A champions could be ready to give up a leading player in their bid to bring the France international back.

TOP STORY – POGBA TO JUVENTUS, DYBALA OR PJANIC TO MAN UTD

Manchester United midfielder Pogba could return to Juventus for money plus Paulo Dybala or Miralem Pjanic, according to Tuttosport.

Dybala almost headed to Old Trafford during the close season but is reportedly close to signing a contract extension with Juventus.

Pjanic, meanwhile, has made 32 appearances in all competitions this season, having arrived at Juve from domestic rivals Roma in 2016.

ROUND-UP

– The talk around Lautaro Martinez possibly leaving Inter to join Barcelona continues. Sport reports Barca are advancing in their bid to convince Martinez, with their project and potentially playing with Lionel Messi at club level their key points.

– With his Real Madrid future uncertain, Marcelo could be set for a move. Juventus are again interested in the left-back, according to Marca.

– Staying at the Santiago Bernabeu – Lucas Vazquez could also be heading for a Real Madrid exit. AS reports there have been no discussions over a potential contract extension with the forward, whose deal expires next year.

– Martin Braithwaite only arrived at Barcelona in February, but the LaLiga giants are already considering their options. Sport says Barca will not sell Braithwaite for less than €18million, which is what they paid to land the forward. Everton and West Ham are reportedly interested in the Denmark international.

– Arsenal are seemingly considering a move for Nabil Fekir again. The Premier League club were linked with the forward last year, but the Daily Star reports the Real Betis man is back on their radar as a potential replacement for Dani Ceballos, whose loan from Real Madrid ends at the conclusion of the season.
