FIFA President Gianni Infantino Says Players protesting over George Floyd’s death deserve Applause, not Punishment.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino Says Players protesting over George Floyd’s death deserves applause,  not Punishment.

This comes at  a time when B. Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho was shown a yellow card for taking off his jersey during a bundesliga match so he could display a T-Shirt emblazoned with “Justice for George Floyd”.

Also, Sancho’s teammate Achraf Hakimi and shalke 04 midfielder Weston Mckennie also carried the same message on their bodies at the weekend.

In reaction to this the German football Federation considers it a disciplinary case due to the fact it was a technical breach of the games laws.

This caused FIFA President Gianni infantino to give his own side of the debate about Bundesliga players protesting during matches against George Floyd, saying they should be applauded and not punish.

Key Points

– Gianni infantino says leagues should use “common sense” when considering rules prohibiting political slogans,  statement or images in games.

– Last week a number of players in Germany’s Bundesliga, including Dortmund star Jadon Sancho, protested the killing of George Floyd.

– The English FA has confirmed it will heed Infantino’s advice when the premier league season resumes on June 17.

Infantino’s comments were published on a statement by FIFA and were set to feature in a clear letter to 211 member Associations.

The statement urges all leagues to apply a ” common sense” and have in consideration the context surrounding the event.

The laws of the game prohibit “any political, religious, or personal slogans statement or images” on equipment.

The European football governing body UEFA has also joined the course as they will overlook the rule so as to allow all Mr. George Floyd tributes in the continental competitions it oversees.

“Football is a sport which encourages tolerance,  inclusion and justice”, UEFA president Aleksander Cerefin said.

It should be noted that Mister Floyd is black man and former community college basketball player who died after a white police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes even after he stopped moving and stopped pleading for air.
