AFCON 2021: Coach Eguavoen Resigns After Super Eagles Disastrous Round of 16 Exit.

Interim coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria has resigned after a disastrous AFCON round of 16 exit.

The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their round of 16 clash on Sunday January 23 in Garoua.

The defeat sees interim coach Augustine Eguavoen stepping down as coach just two months to Nigeria’s world cup qualifying match against the black stars of Ghana.

Eguavoen led the Super Eagles to a 100% record in the group stage,  with wins against Egypt,  Sudan and Guinea Bissau as they hunt for a fourth AFCON title.

However,  the dissapointing defeat to the carthage eagles on Sunday led to the resignation of the interim coach.

“Which happens next is that i’m the interim coach and technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation”, Eguavoen said during post match press conference.

“I will go back to my position and allow the NFF to make a decision on the way forward.

Eguavoen was appointed last month as interim coach of the Super Eagles to replace Gernot Rohr who was sacked, and the 100% group stage record prompted calls for him to be maintained as a permanent coach.

The FA had already appointed Portuguese Coach Jose Peseiro as the new team coach earlier last month.

So the new boss will have a huge task to lead Nigeria into their world cup qualifying match against Ghana in March.
