AFCON 2021: Karl Toko Hits Brace As Cameroon Picks First Semi Final Ticket.

Cameroon have booked their place in the semifinals after a 2-0 win over Gambia in their quarter final clash.

Cameroon have beaten Gambia in the first quarter final clash to book the first semi final ticket of the ongoing Africa cup of nations.

A second half brace from Olympique Lyonnais forward, Karl Toko ensured victory for indomitable Lions as they keep a 100% record against the scorpions.

The Scorpions who have conceded just one goal in the tournament saw them concede two in 90 minutes.

Fai Collins recorded his third Assist of the tournament as he was the source of Karl Toko’s first goal.

The win for Cameroon means they are now unbeaten in their last nine games in all competition (8wins and 1draw). While the Gambia’s four games unbeaten run finally came to end (3wins,  1draw,  1defeat).

Cameroon awaits the winner of Egypt vs Morocco clash ahead of the semis.



The Course of the Match.

Tom Sainfiet went in four a 4-4-2 formation which saw the return of Janko into the starting line up. Scorer of two of their goals Ablie Jallow was absent due to injury.

While Antonio Conceicao went in for a 3-5-3 formation as he goes for an all dominant midfield in the game.

A minute of silence was observed following the stampede at Olembe Sports Complex during the round of 16 clash between Cameroon and Comoros which led to eight deaths and many injured.

Cameroon looked more dominant at the level of the midfield as inter passing was the main agenda.

The first real chance came from Aboubakar who was looking for his seventh goal in the tournament, but his shot couldn’t hit the target.

Cameroon looked dangerous going forward as Aboubakar couldn’t provide the finishing touch to Oum Gouet’s cross.

The Gambia whose strategy is to see Cameroon hit from the counter attack paid off when Muhammed Badamosi almost put the host nation in trouble, but Cameroon goalkeeper Onana was there to avert the danger.

Nouhou Tolo got a brilliant run into the Gambia area, but his shot was saved by the  Baboucarr Gaye.

The first real chance came in at the 35th minute, when Aboubakar’s header was saved by Gaye, the closest Cameroon  had in the game.

The Gambia defense led by Omar Colley and Gomez James proved solid as the lions hunt for an opening game.

The second half was not different as the indomitable lions continue their dominance in the game.

Four minutes into the second half, Cameroon got their break through at the 49th minute following a brilliant trick from Moumi and Fai to find Karl Toko who had a powerful header to beat goalkeeper Gaye to put Cameroon in front.

At the 53rd minute, Zambo played a brilliant pass to Fia Collins, but his shot went off target.

Cameroon continue to be superior as they got their second goal through Karl Toko at the 56th minute to put Cameroon two goals up for the good.

Gambia’s Modou Barrow looks a threat to the Cameroon defense but his cross couldn’t beat Andre Onana.

The Gambians press for an inspirational goal, but the defense of Cameroon led by Michael Ngadeu has been so solid and difficult to break.

Another brilliant play between Zambo and Aboubakar, but the shot of the latter couldn’t hit the target.

Musa Barrow who has scored twice in the tournament already, came close to score from long range, but his shot was blocked by Castelletto.

Musa Barrow and Modou Barrow try to find something tangible for the scorpions, but the defense of Cameroon has always been on the alert of any danger.

Fai Collins who has three assist in the tournament so far, saw his part in the game ending prematurely after sustaining an arm string injury. He was however replaced by Olivier Mbaizo at the 84th minute.

A long range pass from Andre Onana that found Njie Clinton, but couldn’t beat Gaye from close range, with the follower by Aboubakar went wide.

Cameroon hungry for more but the Gambia defense still kept their water tight defense as ended 2-0 to Cameroon.

Cameroon progress to the semi finals and awaits winner of Egypt vs Morocco clash.
