AFCON 2021: National Thunders Edge Pass Leone Stars To Win A Place In The Round Of 16.

The National thunders of Equatorial Guinea have defeated the Leone stars of Sierra Leone 1-0 to join the Ivory Coast in the round of 16.

Pablo Ganet ‘s 37 minute sensational strike was enough to see the national thunders seal through to the round of 16.

The win for them means they qualify second in their pool though with seven point. They will play either Mali, Gambia or Tunisia in the round of 16.

The Course of The first half

The two teams know what is a stake going into the encounter. The national thunders know a win or a draw will take them to the round of 16,while,  the Leone stars know nothing short of a victory will take them to the second round.

The two began play in the first minutes of the game with caution. But Equatorial Guinea looks more dominant in terms of possession.

At the 8th minute, Basilio Ndong who plays his club football for IK Start Kristiansand in Norway had a slim chance, but goalkeeper Mohammed Kamara provided a save.

The national thunders looked more superior side within the first ten minutes of the game.

The Leone stars had a chance from a cross from Kei Kamara, but Musa Kamara could not provide the finishing after he was pushed by a defender from Equatorial Guinea.

Moments later, Jose Machin had a chance to put the 2015 semi finalist in front, but goalkeeper Mohammed Kamara was there to save the leone stars.

Herculesfc midfielder, Frederico bicoro had a turtle with Sierra Leone defender, Kevin Wright. The former won the Battle, but his shot went over the cross bar.

Equatorial Guinea ones again showing their superiority complex in the game with Jose Antonio, Dorian Junior, and Jose Machin and Ivan Salvador being the main threats to the Sierra Leone defense.

Hifk forward, Kei Kamara again at the center of Sierra Leone’s chances as he sends a beautiful cross in the enemy territory, but was cleared by the Equato Guinea defender.

Ten minutes to half time, the national thunders had a big opportunity, as Ivan Salvador made use of an assist from Pablo Ganet, but his shot was blocked by the defense of Sierra Leone.

The boys of Jaun Micha didn’t give up so easily, as they got their goal at the 37th minute through a sensational 25 yards strike from Pablo Ganet, who benefited from a brilliant assist from Ivan Salvador to put the 2015 semi finalist in front.

The Leone stars made some signs to level scores, but the defenders of Equatorial Guinea were more solid, especially the lights Carlos Akapo, Saul Basilio and Bassilio Ndong.

Course of The Second half

The second half is indifferent, as the Equatorial Guinea side maintain their superiority complex in the first minutes of the half.

Jose Machin had a brilliant shot to double Equatorial Guinea’s lead, but goalkeeper Mohammed Kamara provided another cool save.

The Leone stars had their best chance in the game from Steven Caulker at the 62 minute of the game, but his header was inches away from hitting the target.

At the 75th minute, Ivan Salvador created a big chance to Pablo Ganet, but his shot was saved.

The Leone stars had a penalty at the 85th minute after a Ganet brought down Issah in the penalty box.

Kei Kamara  stepped up to save his side a point, but goalkeeper Jesus Lazard provided a big save.

The Equatorial Guinea side went riot in search for the second goal as the lights of substitute, Emilio Nsue, and Salvador all missed their chances.

The national thunders got a clear chance at injury time, after Salvador was brought down by Jannick Buyla. Initially the Egyptian referee pointed to the penalty spot, but after reviewing the situation, it was a freekick at the edge of the box.

However, the chance was squandered, as it ended 1-0 Equatorial Guinea.

In the other group game,  Cote d’Ivoire beat Algeria 3-1 to top group E.
