AFCON2021: Cameroon Sneak Into Last Eight After Defeating Depleted But Heroic Comoros

Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toko Ekambi were on the score sheet to send the lions into the quarter-final of the TototalEnergies Africa Cup of Nation

Host nation Cameroon and debutants Comoros matches strength with strength at the Paul Biya Stadium for a place in the quarter-final on Monday night

The Indomitable Lions came into the game after haven enjoyed an unbeaten campaign so far, finishing top in Group A, while Comoros stunned Ghana in a thrilling group finale to progress to the next phase of the tournament.

With the home crowd roaring them on, Cameroon head into the knockout stages Comoros with real belief and confidence in their chances of going all the way in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations following an impressive group-stage run.

At the 18th minute, Cameroon miss a huge opportunity as they break on the counter-attack and Toko Ekambi with all the space in the world on the right shot the ball across the bar

Comoros ten-man defended with a lot of passion to frustrate the hosting effort on goal as Cameroon had no shot on target after 25 minutes of play

At the 29th minute, Cameroon breaks the deadlock after dispossessing Comoros’ defense.

Aboubakar breaks into the box and tees off Toko Ekambi, who beats Alhadhur with a soft shot down his right angle to give the host the lead

Comoros come just a whisker away from an equalizer, TWICE! At the 33rd minutes

Mogni delivers a fantastic shot from the edge of the box but Onana denies it with an incredible lunge to his bottom left corner.

M’Changama picks up the rebound inside the penalty area and releases a good shot towards the bottom right corner but the Cameroon keeper shows incredible reflexes once more

HALF-TIME

CAMEROON 1️⃣ – 0️⃣ COMOROS

The second quarter started with Cameroon dominating the game just like in the first half but could not deliver at the final third

Three minutes in the second Comoros makeshift goalkeeper Alhadhur denies a thunderous header by the AFCON’s top scorer Aboubakar

Cameroon misses an unbelievable opportunity to double their lead but is denied by a fantastic Alhadhur!

Aboubakar breaks inside the area from the left and delivers a shot that the Comoros makeshift keeper saves down his bottom left corner with a fine lunge.

Ngamaleu gets the rebound but the full-back quickly gets back up to his feet and saves his shot with a stunning save!

With the second goal still far from coming Coach Antonio Conceicao made a double change as Njie replaces Choupo-Moting and Bassogog takes Ngamaleu’s place to go for speed at the flanks

Cameroon’s Toko Ekambi breaks behind Comoros’ defence at the 65th minute and gets the ball on the left before delivering a low cross to Aboubakar, who scores but Toko Ekambi was evidently offside and the goal was called off for an offside

Cameroon double their lead with Aboubakar scoring past the fantastic made goalkeeper when Hongla delivers a fantastic low pass to Aboubakar, who runs behind Comoros’ defense

Comoros come extremely close to an equaliser at the 78th minute, with a loose header sets Ben inside the area and he delivers a powerful shot that is denied by Andrew Onana

Comoros continued with their threats and with four minutes to full time Comoros with a free kick at 30 yard M’Changama scored an absolute screamer to pull one back for Comoros

Comoros made several attempts with after three minutes, added on but all effort proved abortive and it ended with 10 men Comoros going back home and Cameroon making the last eight
