Algeria eased past Ghana in a convincing 3-0 victory at the Education City Stadium on Wednesday to cap off their preparations for the AFCON.

Strikes from Adam Ounas and Islam Slimani on either side of a Jonathan Mensah own goal saw Djamel Belmadi’s men run out comfortable winners in Qatar.

The Desert Foxes, who recently went all the way in December’s Arab Cup, is yet to taste defeat across all competitions since a 3-0 defeat to Morocco three years ago.

Despite only managing seven points from their six qualifying matches, Sierra Leone managed to book a place at the Cup of Nations after finishing as runners-up to Nigeria in Group L.

John Keister’s men are one of the least experienced teams at this year’s competition having not featured at this level since the 1996 edition in South Africa

They have also never made it past the first round in any of the previous two appearances and will need to be near-perfect if they are to stand any chance of breaking that duck.

Reigning champions Algeria begin the defense of their Africa Cup of Nations title with a contest against Sierra Leone at the Japoma Stadium on Tuesday.

The teams are drawn in Group E of this year’s tournament alongside Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea.

In the 4th minute of play, Riyad Mahrez classic pass could not be converted by Islam Slimani who majestically shot off-target

No one needs to tell you that Algeria are the favorite in this group but almost conceded from a freekick setpiece when Alhaji Kamara made a cross into the 18 yards but Kei Kamara heads it wide for a goal kick

With 14 minutes to the end of the first quarter, what many expected from the defending champions is not what they saw as Riyad Mahrez magic for Manchester city could not be replicated in Japoma as Sierra Leone dominated possession and almost scored from a counter-attack but unfortunately for Sofiane Boulaya was comfortably save by Adi Rais Cabos

At the 38th minute, Algeria counter-attacked through Mohamed Youcef but he was brought down at the edge of the 18 yards to give Algeria a goal-scoring opportunity but Mohamed Youcef shot was deflected by the Sierra Leone defense

Despite the champions having a greater share of ball possession 68% because of to many passes, Sierra Leone were better with a total of 7 shots as against 4, and that brought the game to a break as the first half ended in a stalemate

The second began with coach Djamel Belmadi of Algeria making an early substitution bringing on Djamel Benlmari for Abdelkadar Bedrane to fix his shaky defense

The champions tried to close the gap at the midfield with shot passes but all effort proved abortive.

At the 60th minute Sierra Leone began joking at the defense and almost conceded from a Yacine Nasr Eddine shot but goalkeeper Mohamed Nbalie with an outstanding save to frustrate the defending champions

Substitute Sofiane Bende bka at the 66th minute almost break the deadlock from a rebound but his shot was deflected for a corner by the super defense of Sierra Leone

Algeria elevated their performance with just 10 minutes left to full time but all effort to get a win proved abortive. The champions were a shadow of themselves for 90 minutes.

Sierra Leone with a brilliant performance in the first quarter gave them what will be a historic moment in football history to end the winning run of Algeria the champions of 2019

An opening fixture against the current champions was as daunting as it gets, but the west Africans rise up to the occasion to endure another underwhelming campaign in Japoma
