Basketball: COVID19 Eliminates Senegal From Olympic Qualifying Tournament

Senegal Outclass Because of Covid19

The Senegalese Senior National Basketball team could not make the trip to Serbian capital Belgrade for the final Olympic qualifier, which is set to start tomorrow 29th June 2021

This was confirm early today by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as result of 4 positive cases of Covid 19 from the delegation from Senegal. Three players and one member of staff tested positive

In a statement, the Senegalese basketball federation announced that, following the confirmation of the four cases of COVID-19 among the members of the men’s national team detected during their stopover in Germany, the health protocol currently in force in the Republic Federal Government does not provide for any possibility of derogation from the confinement measure imposed on people who have been in contact with confirmed cases carrying COVID-19.

According to the Senegalese federation, “these same measures are also applied by airlines which refuse to carry contact cases”

The event in Belgrade is one of four Olympic qualifiers being held, with the winner of each securing their place at the delayed 2020 Games in Tokyo.

Senegal had been due to face Puerto Rico tomorrow and Italy on Wednesday June 30 but the matches have now been called off, resulting in their two Group B opponents booking their places in the semi-final without playing a game.

Italy and Puerto Rico are scheduled to meet each other on Thursday July 1st in the only Group B match
