As the curtains finally fall in the inaugural sportpesa super cup it shall a be clash of titans when AFC Leopards meet Gor Mahia in the finals later today from 3 pm at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
With a big history in between them, both sides shall be counting on history to help them deliver the cup back home their fans.
AFC Leopards shall be banking on their history against coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno, who is yet to win a Mashemeji derby with him as head coach of the green army K’Ogalo, and by look of recent runs AFC Leopards have an upper hand to win the derby as they’ve never lost a derby with a new coach in place, now they have coach Dorian Marin after there former coach Stewart Hall deserted them after having a run of seven games without a win.
With a this being the first derby outside Kenya since 1985 Cecafa Club Championship in Khartoum, where AFC Leopards lost to Gor Mahia 2-0 in the finals, and having lost to them earlier on in the 1980 in Cecafa Club Championships final in Malawi, where Gor Mahia won 3-2 to lift the title, Gor shall be banking on that good away from home streak to help them beat Leopards in today’s final as they look forward to taking away Ksh 3million in cash prize and and eventually a chance to play English Premier League Side Everton FC in Dar es Salaam.
AFC Leopards also have an advantage over their in-laws since they have a host of their first team players while Gor Mahia shall be using an in experienced makeshift team B to try and win them the cup as most of their first team legion are away on international duty with their respective countries.
