Forced into lockdown by the coronavirus, Cameroon clubs outside the lucrative Elite One Championship are facing an unprecedented period of financial uncertainty.
Elite Two, Regional leagues and Divisional League matches will not resume until June 30th at the earliest and even that date looks optimistic given the chaos caused by the pandemic.
A grim reality is taking hold in boardrooms around the country and some teams fear they could be forced out of business if football doesn’t return until after June and July.
Aware of the growing panic, the Football League has no relief package, based on early payment of bonuses to assist financially stricken clubs.
These are unprecedented times for all of the clubs in so many different ways One of the most concerning features of the situation for everyone is that there is no clarity as to when it will end.
Most Club Presidents will be looking for ways of reducing their cost base and this will include making some extremely difficult decisions when it comes to players and their staff.
Without matchday revenue, it is likely that some clubs will leave their players with no pay if the lockdown continues into June.
In the Elite Two, club presidents have already told their players and staff they will not be giving any bonuses in a bid to stay afloat and this has left some players worried and blames COVID19 for their long stay without football on the pitch
There could be aid on the horizon if the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) are willing to release some funds to help players of the Elite Two. But that remains uncertain and, for now, fear is the over-riding mood across Cameroon football.
It is going to require government help as well. The biggest worry is that so many non-league clubs, they are integral parts of their community. It worries me if these clubs are lost, what will happen going forward
Clubs need a concentrated effort. I don’t think clubs can expect a bailout from the Federation so it needs to be government-led.”
It may not be only non-league and lower league teams in Cameroon who feel the pinch, with Elite Two sides Foncha Street and AS Matelots both having endured financial difficulties before the virus.
Like everybody else, it will have an impact on clubs as well. They are not going to shy away from that. But hopefully, they can all pull together and can find a way through.

CAF Qualifiers: A busy 12 Months for Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions (November 2020 to November 2021).
The indomitable of Cameroon will face a busy twelve months in both the AFCON and world cup qualifiers to begin from November 2020 to November 2021.
This comes after CAF and FIFA had to revise the two competitions in light of the Coronavirus pandemic outbreak which halted many sporting activities in the continent.
Cameroon like any other country in Africa, will be involved in both the AFCON and world cup qualifiers to begin in November 2020 to November 2021.
Cameroon’s Indomitable lions resume their AFCON qualifiers this November 2020, with a double header against Mozambique in their 3rd & 4th round matches while, in March next year, Antonio Conceicao’s charges will play their 5th and 6th round matches against Cape Verde islands and Rwanda respectively.
Though Cameroon have qualified automatically as host, the lions are engaged in the qualifiers so as to gain more game time.
With the AFCON qualifiers not a serious business per say, the world cup qualifiers will be the most difficult adventure for coach Antonio Conceicao as the Indomitable Lions will have to play Mozambique, Malawi and one of Africa’s best representatives at the world cup in recent times “the Elephants” of Ivory coast in the world cup qualifiers to begin in May 2021.
It should be noted that, the top teams of each of the groups will qualify for the play offs which have been scheduled for November 2021.
With the absence of the Indomitable Lions in Russia 2018, football lovers in Cameroon are hoping that Antonio Conceicao will be the man to take Cameroon to the promise land.
