29-year-old Jacques Zoua is the lone active Indomitable Lion who will play with the Intermediate Lions in the African Nations Championship hosted by Cameroon, from January 16.
The AS Futuro man has made it clear that only his presence doesn’t guarantee for Cameroon’s first African Nations Championship triumph.
Jacques Zoua isn’t the most loved or a fan favorite, but has opined to journalists the enormous sacrifices he had to make to be in the side, plus, he has asked for more from his teammates.
The 2017 AFCON winner started by making mention of the fact that he came back to fatherland due to the Covid19 pandemic, and terminated his contract with FC Viitorul due to a proposed change of terms of his contract by Romanian first-tier side, FC Viitorul.
“While in Cameroon, i was contacted by the Supervisor of the CHAN side – Gweha Ikouam who is a man I respect. He told me that the nation needs me.”
“After him, I received other calls from the technical staff and also from some personalities asking me to standby my career in Europe and join the team for the tournament. Without thinking I agreed; because you don’t say no to your country. A national team player is like a soldier; when he is needed, he has to respond.I have obviously discussed this with my family and those around me. Some were not very excited,” Zoua reiterated.
The former Cotonsport man has scored once in the build up of the competition; coming off the bench in the pre – CHAN tourney against Niger, but warns that his lone presence cannot do the trick.
“We have to be level-headed: my presence here is not automatic victory. It is on the pitch that we must battle,” Zoua ended.
