CHAN 2021: Joseph Dion Ngute drops hint on a possible return of fans

Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute on Thursday December 10, visited infrastructure in Yaoundé, which will host the African Nations championship, CHAN, schedule in to kick-off in Cameroon as from January 16, 2021.

The PM appreciated the quality of infrastructure, but what caught the attention of many, was when he called on all Cameroonians to come to the stadium and enjoy the wonderful infrastructure, when the competition begins in January.

“We are here to see all the wonderful improvements that have taken place. I can assure all Cameroonians that they should be proud of what we’ve achieved. It is true that we have a few details to complete, some of them will be completed before CHAN begins but I think every Cameroonian should be proud of what we have because I think this is comparable to what exist anywhere else in the world”, Joseph Dion Ngute told reporters after a tour of infrastructure in the Nation’s capital.

Since March 2020, when the first case of Covid-19 were spotted in Cameroon, there has been limited number of people allowed to watch games in the stadium. The Ministry of Public Health gave authorization to The Cameroon Football Federation to allow maximum 200 persons in the stadium during games.

But going by the words of Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, it seems fans will be allowed to turn out in their numbers, when the CHAN kicks off on January 16.

All I am asking Cameroonians now is to support this competition when it begins, to come to the stadium and to enjoy this wonderful infrastructure and to enable us even with this period of Covid19, to have a smile on our faces”, Dion Ngute added.

If the words of the Prime Minister are to be taken serious, then it is great news for football lovers in Cameroon, who have been deprived of the opportunity to watch their teams play. Such was the case when the Indomitable lions hosted Mozambique at the Reunification stadium in Douala last month, while hundreds of PWD fans were denied access into the Stadium, when their darling club made their CAF Champions league debut against Kaizer Chiefs in Limbe on Sunday November 29, 2020.
