Coronavirus: Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus players agree temporary pay cut

Published

on

Juventus have reached an agreement with Cristiano Ronaldo and their other first-team stars for a pay cut while Serie A is suspended

Maurizio Sarri and the Juventus first team, including Cristiano Ronaldo, have agreed to a temporary pay cut amid the coronavirus pandemic that will save the club around €90million.

Juve have not played since beating Serie A title rivals Inter behind closed doors on March 8.

Italy’s top flight will not return until at least May 3, a date that could be pushed further back, with the nation recording the highest number of deaths at over 10,000 as a result of COVID-19.

Defending champions the Bianconeri have therefore moved to reduce players’ wages.

Fellow Champions League giants Barcelona filed to make cuts after their squad reportedly refused an initial proposal, but Ronaldo and the rest of Juve’s stars – plus head coach Sarri – were able to reach an agreement.

“[The club have] reached an understanding with the players and the coach of the first team regarding their compensation for the residual portion of the current sport season,” a statement read.

“The understanding provides for the reduction of the compensation for an amount equal to the monthly payments of March, April, May and June 2020.

“In the coming weeks, personal agreements with the players and the coach will be finalised, as required by the current regulations.

“The economic and financial effects of the understanding reached are positive for about €90m for the 2019-20 financial year.

“Should the current season’s matches be rescheduled, the club will negotiate in good faith with the players and the coach conditional increases of compensations according to the actual resumption and finalisation of official competitions.

“Juventus would like to thank the players and the coach for their commitment at a difficult time for everyone.”

Inter challenge Roma for Smalling

Published

on

Inter are ready to make their own offer to Manchester United for Chris Smalling, as Roma are forced to stall by the takeover, but the asking price is over €20m.

The defender spent this season on loan at the Stadio Olimpico, with the Giallorossi paying a substantial percentage of his salary.

He has made it clear that he wants to continue his experience in Italy and even remained in the Peninsula for his summer vacation.

Roma had seen their €15m offer rejected, as Manchester United are holding out for at least €20m.

They probably will be able to increase it once Dan Friedkin completes the takeover of the club from James Pallotta later this month.

Meanwhile, La Gazzetta dello Sport claim Inter are ready to dive in and make their own proposal for Smalling.

The Nerazzurri already have a strong rapport with Manchester United following deals for Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

Man Utd name their price for Smalling with Roma ‘desperate’ to seal transfer

Published

on

Manchester United will reportedly demand £20million for Chris Smalling with Roma desperate to seal a permanent deal for the defender.

Centre-half Smalling, 30, is back with United after his season-long loan deal with the Serie A side expired.

But Roma are keen to take him back to Italy after an impressive campaign with the player said to be interested in making the switch.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still a fan of the 31-cap England international, and United are seeking a swift resolution to his future, report The Sun.

Smalling has two years left on his £130,000-a-week Old Trafford deal, with Roma paying a significant portion of his wages during his time in the Italian capital.

And Smalling is reportedly willing to take a sizeable pay cut in order to seal a permanent switch.

Roma have so-far offered only £15million for Smalling, which United have rebuffed.

Solskjaer is keen to add another defender to his ranks, with Marcos Rojo looking likely to leave the club.

Smalling would be down the pecking order if he stayed at the club, with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof the first-choice pairing and Eric Bailly and Phil Jones the back-ups.

Rojo is reportedly attracting interest from across Europe after a proposed transfer to Everton collapsed last summer.

Smalling signed for United from Fulham 10 years ago and has made 323 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, winning two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup and the Europa League.

Lazio’s Ciro Immobile set to join an exclusive club as the highest-scoring player in Europe this season

Published

on

Ciro Immobile

In a decade dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the underrated Italian is near assured of winning the European Golden Shoe for the continent’s top scorer.

From Messi, to Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Braut Haaland, nobody in Europe has managed to keep pace with the Naples-born player.

Immobile overtook Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski with his 35th goal against Brescia midweek, and will close his campaign against Napoli on Saturday.

Juventus star Ronaldo, on 31 goals, is four behind before the Serie A champions’ final game against Roma in Turin, in which he may not even play with the Champions League looming.

It would not be the first time that 30-year-old Immobile has topped the Serie A goal-scoring charts, having won the ‘Capocannoniere’ twice before in 2014 and 2018.

But he would become just the third Italian winner of the European Golden Shoe after Roma’s Francesco Totti (26) in 2007 and Luca Toni for Fiorentina in 2006 (31).

Another two goals on Saturday would also see him surpass Gonzalo Higuain’s Serie A record of 36 goals, set playing for Napoli in the 2015-16 season.

“I am only sorry that I cannot celebrate these numbers with the fans,” said Immobile, nicknamed ‘King Ciro’ in the capital, but whose career before arriving in Rome had been erratic.

Success has not followed onto the national team, where he has scored ten goals in 39 games, taking the brunt of criticism after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Immobile started his career at Juventus, where he made just three appearances before a breakthrough loan season in 2011-2012 at Pescara where his 28 goals lifted the Serie B side into the top flight.
