Debutants Gambia Records First AFCON Win Against Mauritania.

The Scorpions of Gambia have recorded their first-ever victory in the AFCON on their debut match against Mauritania.

A sensational 11th minute strike from Ablie Jallow ensured the first ever victory for Gambia in the AFCON.

The early minutes of the game saw both teams punching themselves,  with Mauritania having a go with a shot from Ibnou Ba, while Ebrima Colley and Musa Barrow combined but could not get the finishing.

Mauritanian’s Ibnou Ba had a shot at the edge of the box, but his shot could not find the target.

Fofana Gussouma of Mauritania had a brilliant shot from long range,  but was inches away from hitting the target at the 7minute.

Then, the deadlock was finally broken when Bologna midfielder,  Musa Barrow had a brilliant run into the opponent’s territory,  as he found Ablie Jallow outside the box who had a sensational strike that beat goalkeeper Diop Babacar to give the debutant the lead at the 11th minute.

The Mauritanians, however,  made response especially that of Mohammed Dellah who’s chance went off target.

A brilliant cross from Karamoko Souleymane, which led to a scramble between Gambian goalkeeper,  Jobe Modou and Mauritania forward Ibnou Ba. The latter won the battle,  but could not fine the target.

Another brilliant chance for Mauritania as Fofana Gussouma found Ibnou Ba ones again,  but his header was not hard enough to beat goalkeeper Jobe Modou at the 36th minute.

The Mauritania continue to knock for an equalizer,  especially the chance of El Hassen; but his shot went over the cross bar.

With the return of the second half,  the Gambians looked more comfortable as the Mauritanians pose little traits to their defense.

The Scorpions had a big chance to double their lead from a set piece, but Gomes James’ header couldn’t find the target at the 55th minute.

A brilliant combination between the goalscorer,  Ablie Jarrow and Musa Barrow,  but the latter’s shot was blocked for a Gambian corner at the 57minute.

Few minutes later,  Ebrima Colley had a glearing chance, but his shot went wide.

Little was portrayed by FC Zurich forward,  Assan Ceesay who has scored 11 goals for the swiss side, as he was substituted at the 60th minute.

Mauritania on the front foot again in search for an equalizer as Aboubakar Kamara hits a brilliant diagonal shot, but shot was saved by goalkeeper Jobe Modou.

The boys of Didier Gomis have had chances to level scores but the defense line of the Gambia led by Gomes James and Omar Colley have been a nightmare to the attackers of Mauritania.

The Gambians have proven that they are the better side as they held on to their lead.

It should be noted that the Mauritanian are yet to win an AFCON game in four matches.  They have recorded two draws and two defeats.

For the Gambia, this is their first AFCON match in their history and they made the positive start with a win.

Next stop for Gambia is against Mali who had a brilliant victory against Tunisia.
