After failing to get the services of former Indomitable Lions boss, Hugo Broos, the Dr Congo have finally settled on former Egypt coach, Hector Cuper.
Dr Congo missed out on qualification for AFCON 2021 in Cameroon next year, after finishing third in their qualifying group to Gabon and the Gambia. This will be their first AFCON absence since the 2012 edition in Gabon and Equatorial guinea.
With a frustrating AFCON qualifying campaign, head coach Christian Nsengi Biembe was sacked with immediate effect.
Dr Congo almost appointed Hugo Broos but were outsmarted by South Africa.
With Attention now focusing on the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Dr Congo decided to appoint Former Egypt coach, Hector Cuper as they search for their first world cup participation since 1974.
The former Valencia coach was in incharge of the seven time African champions between 2015 and 2018.
While incharge of Egypt, the 65 year old guided the Pharaohs to the 2017 AFCON final in Gabon, which they lost to eventual champions Cameroon.
He also led Egypt to their first world cup participation in 28 years in Russia in 2018.
The two time UEFA champions league finalists parted ways with Egypt after a disappointing performance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, losing all three group games.
Before his appointment as coach of Dr Congo, he was coach of Uzbekistan, where he guided them to the round of 16 of the AFC Asian Cup losing to Australia on penalties.
He was however sacked in September 2019 following a poor start to the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
Hector Cuper and Dr Congo will begin their world cup qualifiers against Benin in September, as they have been drawn with Madagascar, Tanzania and Benin.
