This will be a battle between Canon of Yaoundé endowed with football history and Bamboutos of Mbouda, the current most popular club of the country. The objective for Canon of Yaounde would be to break the ill luck and win on home ground while Bamboutos is bent at keeping close with the to runners.
The “mekok megonda” have back to back lost two games played in Yaoundé (Colombe 3-3 Canon, Canon 0-2 Stade Renard) and at the same time won two games played away from home ( Avion 1-3 canon, PWD 0-2 Canon). Canon since the beginning of the season have lost 5 home games and won only 3.
Ngougni François, coach of Canon of Yaounde made a statement after the club’s win in Bamenda:
“We have to exorcise the team and win at home because the of not winning home might be away from sports.”
Nevertheless, Canon players always face pressure when playing at home and this has several times had a negative consequence on the performance of its players. The team has lost its last 3 games played at the Ngoa Ekelle stadium.
- Canon 0-1 APEJES (Game week 11 – 4th December 2019)
- Canon 0-1 Eding Sport (Game week 14 – 18 December 2019)
- Fortuna 1-0 Canon (Game week 15 – 22 December 2019)
Canon’s last win on this pitch was on 1st of December 2019 when they beat Coton Sport 3-0 on Game week 10.
Bamboutos of Mbouda is at the 5th position with 32 points, 6 points away from league leaders Coton Sport of Garoua. The Mangwa boys had declared their early ambition of winning the championship, and they will need a victory to catch up with its immediate top rivals who have all won their games, except for Coton Sport of Garoua. Bamboutos is on a 6 games run without conceding any defeat. Their last defeat was conceded in Bamenda when they fell 3-1 to Yong Sports academy on December 18th 2019. (56 days without a defeat or 540 minutes without a defeat)
Head to Head
Both teams have met 16 times in total and Canon has had the upper hand in terms of wins
8 wins for Canon, 4 wins for Bamboutos and 4 games ending in a draw.
In the reverse fixture played on the 3rd of November 2019, both teams went away with 1 point after a 1-1 draw.
Players to Watch:
Canon of Yaounde will undoubtedly rely on their best goal scorer in the person of Alphonse Kevin Assiga who’s on 8 goals so far. His principal objective will be to score more goals while the other top goal scorers are absent because of national duty call (Leon Boyomo with 10 goals and Samuel Nlend with 8 goals). Assiga will surely be paid up front with mate and forward David Theophane Ngondo who scored Canon’s first goal in Bamenda against PWD. The experienced striker and former champion of Cameroon with Eding Sport in 2017 will have to play a great role in challenging the likes of Rostand Moukap and Etame Ngombe in the heart of Bamboutos’ defence.
Oumarou Khaotab will be very instrumental in the midfield and if inspired will be able to cause much trouble to the Bamboutos midfielders as he’s the one who’s the umbilical cord between the defense and attack lines.
Patrick Anaba Metogo and Denis Florent Mbappe will play at the flanks to give speed and deliver crosses to the centre forwards.
Canon will miss its captain and central defender Junior Ngede Ngede in camp with the intermediate lions.
On the side of Bamboutos, the team in anticipation of the CHAN had reinforced its squad with a number of players coming back from international adventure with Bangwen, Koupit, Ako, Alain Nandjou and Tchami from Elite two (former captain of Leopard of Douala)
The absence of it’s key forwards (Marc ojong, Pange Lobe, Ndi Rene, Mbappe Müller) will not be very much felt as these substitutes are equally player sof great value.
Goalkeeper NACISSE JUNIOR NLEND, Rostand Moukap and Aurelien Etame ngombe in the heart of the defense, ACHILLE FOKEM NAMEKONG, Henry AKO and JOSEPH HERVE BOUMSONG in the midfield while CHEVALIER PIERRE VICTOR and AIME GERARD MANGOLO will have the opportunity to prove their worth in this game on the attack line.
