Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is no longer Arsenal’s captain after the club stripped of the captaincy, following disciplinary breach last week.
This was confirmed following a meeting between the club senior officials and the manager, Mikel Arteta with Aubameyang to inform him of the decision.
“We expect all our players,particularly our captain, to work to the rules and standards we have all set and agreed”, the club said in a statement
The club also confirmed that the 32-year-old will not be available for selection against West Ham on Wednesday.
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta said that the “painful” decision had been made to “defend” the interest of the club.
“I think it’s a really clear statement from the club”Arteta said during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday. “It’s is a decision that we’ve made following the last incident that we had with the player and this is where we stand.
There are controversies over who to become the club’s new captain but Arteta said it is not time to rush.
“it’s really unpleasant situation and it’s not the moment to make any rash decision”, Arteta said.
The stripping of Aubameyang as captain has been a long curse at Arsenal football club. In fact the lights of William Gallas, Robin Van Persie, Laurent Koscielny, Granit Xhaka and now Aubameyang.
Two seasons ago, Onai Emery named Aubameyang as the new captain of the club after taking off the captain armband from Granit Xhaka and Arteta decided to stick to the striker as captain.
Aubameyang early reign as captain, yield fruits as he led Arsenal to FA glory in 2020 and scoring his 28th and 29th goals of that season, but his form dipped after a juicy new long term contract.
Aubameyang’s form witness a drop last season as he managed only 15 goals, his lowest tally since 2010/11 campaign. This lack of goals have continued this season couple with his disciplinary issues.
Reports are saying that Granit Xhaka, Lacazette, Thomas Partey, Kieran Tierney are potential players to succeed Aubameyang as captain.
Arsenal face West Ham on Wednesday, December 15, in a day 17 clash of the premier league.
