However, Neal Maupay’s handball was penalised by referee Chris Kavanagh after he had blown for full-time and Fernandes converted from the spot in the 100th minute.
Pre-season hopes that United could mount a title challenge to their biggest rivals Liverpool and Manchester City dissipated after a dire display in losing 3-1 to Crystal Palace last weekend.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer resisted the temptation to make wholesale changes and got more of the same for the first 45 minutes as Brighton controlled the game.
Leandro Trossard hit both posts with shots from outside the box, while Adam Webster’s looping header came back off the crossbar.
It took United 33 minutes to muster a flowing move involving the front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood, who found the net but the goal was ruled out for offside against Rashford.
Brighton finally got their reward when the tireless Tariq Lamptey burst into the box from right wing-back and was clipped by Fernandes.
The United midfielder was lucky to escape a second yellow card, but Maupay ensured they did pay the penalty with a cheeky chip down the middle of the goal as David de Gea dived to his left.
However, the lead lasted just three minutes as from a fiercely driven Fernandes free-kick, Nemanja Matic turned the ball back across goal and Lewis Dunk turned the ball into his own net.
VAR came to the rescue of both sides within the first 10 minutes of the second half.
United had already conceded a penalty in consecutive games for the first time in 11 years in the Premier League and thought they had given a away a second spot-kick of the match when Paul Pogba was penalised for pulling back Aaron Connolly.
However, Kavanagh overturned his initial decision when he saw a replay of the incident.
At the other end, United’s front three was beginning to click as Rashford swept home Greenwood’s low cross but this time VAR ruled against United with the goalscorer marginally offside.
There was no stopping Rashford moments later when he raced onto Fernandes’s ball over the top and left Ben White trailing on the ground before his deflected effort found the top corner.
Brighton’s bad luck continued when March became the next player to hit the woodwork as his low shot across De Gea came back off the inside of the far post before Trossard smashed against the bar with just the Spanish number one to beat.
The Seagulls seemed to finally have their reward when March ghosted in at the back post to head home Alireza Jahanbakash’s cross.
But in a chaotic finale, Harry Maguire’s header from a corner struck Maupay’s arm and to Brighton’s dismay, a penalty was awarded.
Fernandes has never missed a top-flight penalty and stayed cool under the pressure to ensure Solskjaer’s men escaped with all three points.
Premier League: Matip played the entire match for Liverpool in their 2-2 draw against Everton.
Cameroon international Joel Matip played the entire match for Liverpool in their 2-2 draw against Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the season.
Matip, who has been out of action since June due to injury was selected by Klopp in their match day 5 fixture against Everton, after the “Reds” were punished 7-2 by Aston Villa two weeks ago.
Goals from Mane, fit again after recovering from COVID-19 and Salah were canceled out by Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Liverpool were denied a late winner to Jordan Henderson after Mane was ruled to be fractionally offside by VAR.
It should be noted that, Virgil Van Dijk was hobbled off after a collision with Everton’s goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford.
The game however, ended 2-2 with Joel Matip playing the entire game and with the injury of Van Dijk, the former Shalke 04 defender will be sure to lead the back line for Liverpool in their upcoming matches.
Liverpool Upset As Joel Matip Is Once More Ruled Out For A Muscle Injury
Elvis Kang Sports Writer-Cameroon
Ex-Cameroon center-back Joel Matip has sustained a muscle injury that will keep him out of action for six weeks (42days) according to Liverpool official website.
Joel Matip has been an outstanding center-back for Jürgen Klopp Liverpool over the past three seasons and contributed in Liverpool’s glory of a champions league title in 2019 and a premier league title in 2020.
But injury has kept the prolific center-back out of action for a long time. Joel Matip Sustained an injury in the 2019-2020 season during the goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park on June 21 as Liverpool restarted their campaign after two months without football activities due to covid19.
He was sidelined out of action for 12 weeks (84days) due to a knee injury and eventually missed 20 games without a kick of the ball with for “The Reds”.
Joel played the preseason after recovery from a long knee injury and was available to start the new campaign in style. He was introduced at the 89min for the game at the Amfield against Leeds United
But Liverpool have been dealt a big blow yet again after Joel Matip suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee problem that is expected to keep him out of action for up to another six weeks.
As a result, he will be absent for up to 10 Liverpool matches, including Premier League fixtures against Manchester City and Everton and the rest of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
The Cameroon international is a reliable partner for Virgil van Dijk in the centre of Liverpool’s defence and is comfortable on the ball.
After a 2018-19 season in which he was in and out of the first team, Matip has established himself in the current campaign as arguably the Dutchman’s best partner
Fulham Desperate To Keep Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa Amidst Increasing Interest From Villarreal and AC Milan
Elvis Kang, Sports Writer- Cameroon
Villareal ( Spain) and AC Milan (Italy) are in advanced talks to sign the Cameroonian defensive midfielder, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa but Fulham FC is keen of keeping the midfielder in London
Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (24 years old) who had a successful loan spell last season in Spain with Villarreal where he played 36 games and scored two goals in all competitions has become a target for both Villarreal and AC Milan.
Fulham’s poor start of this season’s Premier League has forced the club’s managers to keep hope of retaining the versatile midfielder to boost their defence and midfield compartments, despite pressing interest from other clubs.
According to Tribal Football, Fulham’s manager Scott Parker explained why he is hoping to keep the Cameroonian Midfielder in London
“It’s very important for us to keep him because of his quality. I see a real good platform for Frank this year, being in the Premier League, to show what he’s about,”
“The problem is the uncertainty you have when the window is open and the season is ongoing. It’s always a concern that someone comes in for one of your players.
“That’s what we’re living with. Let’s see where we are after the window closes.”
It should be noted that Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa has featured for all Fulham’s three Premier League defeats of the season; coming from the beach in the opener against Arsenal and playing full time against Leeds United and Aston Villa.
