FIBA Women Afro-Basket: Sluggish Cape Verde falls Short Against Kenya In Yaoundè

A sluggish offensive performance cost Cape Verde in its first game in the FIBA Women Afro-basket, a 61-58 loss to Kenya on Sunday at the multi-purpose Sports Complex in Yaoundè

Cape Verde struggled to score in the first quarter and put up only 12 points , while Kenya posted 16. Cape Verde made a fast come back in the second quarter with a better performance and Kenya trailed by as many as 9 points in the second quarter. At game half Cape Verde had the advantage of going into the third quarter with 20-33

The second segment of the game became more interesting when Kenya offense finally began to click in the third quarter, as the team cut the deficit to two points, but was not enough to be up by the end of the third quarter as Cape Verde still had a two points advantage going in the final quarter of the game 43-45

The fourth quarter was the decider for both teams who struggled against each other in the last three quarters. Cape Verde sluggish began to lose points on missed from free throws giving Kenya some momentum to move forward. Kenya who lost to Cameroon by a 24 points difference in their opener turn the table around when both teams were tie at 56-56 with just less than a minute to the end of a dramatic encounter. Kenya added 5points to take the tally to 61 and Cape Verde made just extra two points to end with 58 points and reduced their chances to make it to the next round of the competition

Kenya performed poor with free throws and make 11/23 (48%) while Cape Verde was better with Free throws as they made 5/9 (56%)

At two pointers, Kenya was dominated by Cape Verde 22/45 (49%) for Kenya and Cape Verde 19/30 (63%) while three-pointers Kenya won just 2/8 (25%) and Cape Verde with 5/24 (21%) attempts.

Just a slide difference of field goals between the two teams 24/53 (45%) and 24/54 (44%) respectively

Kenya won 29 rebounds and Cape Verde Verde got 28 rebounds with 12 points for Cape Verde as the maximum in a row and 11 for Kenya.

Overall, Kenya outplayed Cape Verde and they deserved the win

Cape Verde last chance of going to the next round remains to be seen when they take on the host Cameroon on Monday
