FIFA And UEFA Suspend Russian Clubs and National Teams From All Competitions.

FIFA council and UEFA executive committee have suspended all Russian clubs and national teams from all organized competitions by these two football institutions.

This comes following the Russian invasion of Ukraine late last week after Russia deployed troops into Ukraine through Belarus.

The decision was taken today February 28 by both the FIFA council and UEFA executive committee.

“Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all people affected in Ukraine. Both presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace”, a statement reads on UEFA website.

The Football World governing body had announced that the Russian national selections will have to play its next matches, especially as part of the World Cup play-offs, on neutral grounds abroad.

The Russian anthem and flag will also be banned from international competitions and will be placed under the name of its Federation- The Football Union of Russia.

But this decision was heavily critized by most European countries like Poland, Sweden and Czech Republic. In fact, these three countries in a joined communique wrote to FIFA that their national teams will not play against Russia in the World cup qualifiers next month.

Also, the English Football Association have made their decision saying that, none of their national teams would play against Russia for the ‘foreseeable future’.

In France, the Football Federation president Noel Le Graet told Me Parisien Daily that he is leaning towards excluding Russia from the World cup.

The lights of Scotland, Republic of Ireland and Northern have also refused to play against Russia.

However, the Russian Football Union said it ‘categorically disagreed ‘ with the decision and will challenge it in accordance with international sports law.

Consequences for Russian players?

The consequence of this joined decision is greatly going to affect the future of Russian footballers both male and female players.

The Russian U-21 team will not be able to play against Northern Ireland in their U-21 championship qualifying clash in March.

Again, following the English Football Association not to allow any of their national teams play against Russia also affects Russia’s participation in the UEFA Women’s EURO Championship to take place in England in June.

Russia were to play Poland in the World cup semi final playoffs in March, but the Polish Football Association president Cezary Kulesca who wrote on Twitter saying their national team will not play against Russia in March.

This also caused Sweden and Czech Republic to take the same stand since the winner of their clash could face Russia in the final playoffs.
