He played like a drain’ – Neville slams Di Maria after wife’s Man Utd jibe

Published

on

Gary Neville has hit out at Angel di Maria’s performances for Manchester United and insisted the winger should have taken a leaf out of Manchester City star Sergio Aguero’s book.

Di Maria arrived at Old Trafford from Real Madrid in 2014 in a move that brought much excitement to supporters.

However, after a decent start in the Premier League, Di Maria’s form plummeted after an attempted burglary at his house in Manchester.

The Argentine then left the following summer to join Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that left a bitter taste in the mouths of many United fans.

That was only made worse after his wife, Jorgelina Cardoso described Manchester as ‘horrible’ and admitted Di Maria only joined the club due to the finances involved.

“I remember Angel coming up and saying, ‘an offer from Manchester United has come in. Maybe we’ll be a little more financially secure’. We fought about it,” Cardoso said to Los ángeles de la mañana .

“I told him, ‘not a chance’, he could go on his own. ‘No, come on. Let’s go’, he replied. There was a lot of money involved and afterwards the Spanish were calling us money-grabbers. And they were right! If you are working for a company and the competition comes along and offers to pay you double, you take it!”

She added: “I didn’t like anything about it (Manchester), not a thing. The women are all pasty-faced and white, prim and proper – weird. You’re walking down the street and you don’t know if they’re going to kill you or what.

“The food’s disgusting. All the girls are all dolled up to the nines, perfectly made-up and there’s me with my hair in a bun and with no make-up on.”

When asked about those comments, Neville didn’t hold back with his criticism of Di Maria’s performances, whilst adding he should have taken note of how fellow Argentines Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta adapted to life in Manchester.

“All I would say is, we hear these stories from time to time where a player has played like a drain, like Di Maria did at Manchester United,” Neville told Sky Sports’ The Football Show.

“He was awful and I had high expectations and excitement when he came to the club thinking we were signing a top player. He was never interested from day one.

“What he needs to do is look across the road at Sergio Aguero, his Argentinian compatriot or Pablo Zabaleta who have done alright in Manchester and haven’t been in a rush to leave.

“I will defend my city to the hill and she did have an unfortunate experience where there was a robbery, which would hamper you mentally and would cloud your judgement of the city.”

Barcelona’s final push to sign Lautaro Martinez

Published

on

Barcelona are preparing a final bid to sign Lautaro Martinez from Inter.

Ronald Koeman knows he needs to find a replacement for Luis Suarez, who is expected to leave for Juventus.

Memphis Depay’s name has been linked with a move to the Camp Nou in recent days, but Lautaro is Barcelona’s main priority.

According to Goal, the Catalan club have decided to make one last push to sign the Argentine this summer.

Lautaro has a 65 million euro release clause at Inter, but Barcelona can’t afford to pay that amount of money at the moment.

As a result, the Blaugrana are looking to enter talks with Inter, although the Italian club have insisted that Lautaro is not for sale.

Barcelona have already agreed personal terms with the 23-year-old, who will earn lot less than Suarez did at the Camp Nou.

Lewandowski scores again: Bayern striker named Germany’s player of the year

Published

on

Robert Lewandowski landed Germany’s Footballer of the Year prize on Sunday as reward for his extraordinary season with Bayern Munich.

The award, voted for by leading journalists in conjunction with Kicker magazine, went to Lewandowski by a resounding margin.

He received 276 votes and Bayern completed a 1-2-3 in the awards as Thomas Muller pulled 54 votes to finish second, five votes ahead of Joshua Kimmich.

Bayern conquered all challenges before them in 2019-20, winning a domestic Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double before going on to triumph in the Champions League, beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the final.

Lewandowski, 32, scored 55 goals across the season and becomes the first non-German winner of the award since Kevin De Bruyne took the honour in 2015 at the end of the Belgium midfielder’s Wolfsburg stay.

The Poland international told Kicker: “I’m very proud of it. All the more because the expectations of me are getting higher and higher and I try to exceed them every year.
