How Football in Cameroon Might Look Like in Post COVID-19 Era?

Published

on

Sports especially football is an activity that unites people together.  At times fans spend their money,  time to either go to the stadia or watch matches on TV just to enjoy the beautiful game but with the outbreak of COVID-19,  sports, football in particular is in jeopardy for the first time since the outbreak of World War Two in 1939.

As Theodore Seuss Geisel, an American poet, cartoonist,  illustrator and screen writer once said ” Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory” and no one can explain this better than a Cameroonian football lover or fan who had weeks and months to go to football pitch on match days according to the football calendar.

Football stakeholders especially club presidents  in Cameroon are getting frustrated as the 2019/20 season is uncertain due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

With the uncertainty of the season to resume, football clubs in Cameroon might be affected negatively in post COVID-19 Era.

Clubs will be in deep financial crisis.

Even before the outbreak of COVID-19,  clubs like DragonTonnerre, AS Fortuna and Avion Academy were already in financial difficulties of paying players and staffs couple with the fact that most elite one and elite 2 clubs depend on government for finances.

With such source of revenue,  such clubs like Tonnerre, Avoin Academy, AS Fortuna  and almost the entire elite two roster might go extinction in post COVID-19 Era since they will be tempted to lay off some of their players and staffs due to  shortage of funds.

As it stand only Colombe, PWD, Cotonsport and Stade Renard are constantly paying their players for elite one and for elite 2, only Astre of Douala and Ofta of Kribi pay their players.

With such scenario, we might see a drastic drop in the number of clubs come in Post COVID-19 Era.

New Possible Structures.

There might be a new football structure in Africa and Cameroon in particular as there will be a change in the manner in which the season will end.

Though this change will involve all stakeholders,  the new football structure might affect clubs like Avoin Academy and Tonnerre in particular as matches will be played in a two or three day routine.

With a club like Tonnerre who transported players using taxis in pre COVID-19 era, many wonder if the management of Tonnerre can withstand such changes in Post COVID-19 Era.

So far, no communique has been made concerning the faith of the season but there is optimism that the season will resume and give time for next season to start.

CAF Qualifiers: A busy 12 Months for Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions (November 2020 to November 2021).

Published

on

The indomitable  of Cameroon will face a busy twelve months in both the AFCON and world cup qualifiers to begin from November 2020 to November 2021.

This comes after CAF and FIFA had to revise the two competitions in light of the Coronavirus pandemic outbreak which halted many sporting activities in the continent.

Cameroon like any other country in Africa,  will be involved in both the AFCON and world cup qualifiers to begin in November 2020 to November 2021.

Cameroon’s Indomitable lions resume their AFCON qualifiers this November 2020, with a double header against Mozambique  in their 3rd & 4th round matches while, in March next year,  Antonio Conceicao’s charges will play their 5th and 6th round matches against Cape Verde islands and Rwanda respectively.

Though Cameroon have qualified automatically as host, the lions are engaged in the qualifiers so as to gain more game time.

With the AFCON qualifiers not a serious business per say,  the world cup qualifiers will be the most difficult adventure for coach Antonio Conceicao as the Indomitable Lions will have to play Mozambique, Malawi and one of Africa’s best representatives at the world cup in recent times “the Elephants” of Ivory coast in the world cup qualifiers to begin in May 2021.

It should be noted that, the top teams of each of the groups will qualify for the play offs which have been scheduled for November 2021.

With the absence of the Indomitable Lions in Russia 2018, football lovers in Cameroon are hoping that Antonio Conceicao will be the man to take Cameroon to the promise land.
