Why didn’t Phil Foden play for England against USA?

England were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw with the United States in the World Cup group stage on Friday night, with fans confused as to why Phil Foden was only an unused substitute.

Foden was regularly used by Gareth Southgate at Euro 2020 before suffering a tournament-ending injury, and he was expected to be a starter in Qatar.

The Manchester City star came off the bench in Monday’s 6-2 thrashing of Iran but was not utilised by Southgate against the States, despite positional rival Mason Mount having a poor game.
