Amazon Prime miked up a referee in Ligue 1 recently, giving viewers a fascinating insight into the role of matchday officials. Communicating with colleagues, players and managers, all while trying to make crucial decisions, looks like a thankless task. It was not the first time a referee has walked out to the centre-circle wearing a wire. ITV did something similar in February 1989, when they listened in on David Elleray while he officiated a Millwall v Arsenal league match. The recording certainly made an impression.
