Indomitable Lions: Antonio Conceiçao justifies his choice of 24 players

Published

on

In a press release, Antonio Conceição the indomitable gaffer justifies the call up of 24 players from an initial list of 34.

COVID-19 Pandemic is the main cause of travelling restrictions

According to the coach of the indomitable lions of Cameroon, the COVID 19 pandemic has created travel restrictions applied by the Dutch government.

“The initial list of preselected was confronted with certain restrictions when calling the players. Given the covid-19 epidemic and possible contagion of players from countries considered to be on the red line. (The Dutch Health organization did not allow entry into Dutch territory without prior quarantine. This jeopardized the proper holding of the camp. For this main reason, I was forced to use the extended roster we compiled from our observation and analysis department in order to have 2 players available for each position.”

The Non central European based players equally could not be called up because of the travel restrictions.

“Some players could not be selected for this camp. These are those playing in China, Turkey, America, Arab countries, some Eastern countries and of course the Players residing in Africa. Let’s say globally, the players playing in the so-called red zone countries.”

Other players are still not willing to play for Cameroon

In the initial list of 32 players, not all newcomers responded positively to the call. Yvan Neyou of Saint Étienne for example made it known that he’s not yet ready for the national colours and wants to focus with his club side. A situation which the coach had to handle by calling other available players in the “green zone” and keeping the door open to all.

“It should be noted that some players who were on the list of 32 preselected, quickly made it known that they are not yet available for the Cameroon national team. Know that from the day I took the responsibility of being a coach-coach, I declared that the selection is open to all players who want to come and represent our country with pride, with pleasure and love for the country, for the flag, for the people. Without any conditionality.”

Antonio Conceiçao remains positive for the future.

“It is on these principles, I believe, that we will be able to build a disciplined selection that will make Cameroon proud and respected.”

This communication from Antonio Conceiçao Oliveira has come to lie low the dust risen by contradictions between the two list published in a short time interval.

The indomitable lions are expected to be in camp from the 5th to the 13th of October 2020 and will end the FIFA window with a friendly against Japan.
