Its exactly one year since the U-17 Lions Conquered Africa for the second time in their history after they beat the “Syli National” of Guinea 5-3 after post match penalties. The match however ended in a goalless draw.
Cameroon began the competition on April 15, 2019 as they beat Guinea 2– with goals from Steve Mvoue and Seidou Ismaila.
On April 18, 2019, the beat Morocco 2-1 with a brace from Seidou Ismaila and three days later they were held by Senegal in a goalless draw.
Entering in to the knockout phase, the U-17 Lions failed to score a single goal as they beat Angola 4-3 after post match Penalties. The match however ended goalless after 120 minutes.
The same scenario was manifested in the final as they beat Guinea 5–3 after post match Penalties. It should be noted that Cameroon beat Guinea in their opening game by 2–.
The victory for Cameroon means they now have two U–17 AFCON titles after they won the first in 2003.
It should be noted that Steve Mvoue was awarded the most valuable player of the tournament.
With such performance from players like Manfred Ekoi who conceded just one goal in the entire competition, Steve Mvoue and Seidou Ismalia, many thought the team will do more at the U-17 world cup in Brazil but the boys of Thomas Libiih failed to live up to expectations as the conceded 6 goals and scored just one.
With a devastating performance at the world cup, coach Thomas Libiih and his entire technical staffs were all sacked with immediate effect.
Total 2019 U-17 AFCON: Cameroon crowned champion
The baby indomitable lions of Cameroon have been crowned U-17 Champions of Africa after haven beaten Guinea 5-3 on penalty shootouts after a nil score at the end of a difficult 90minutes game for both sides.
The lions would score their 5 penalties while goalkeeper Ekoi Manfred of Cameroon will stop Mohamed Sacko’s shot.
Cameroon becomes African champion for the U-17 category for the second time after 2003, joining Ghana and Nigeria at the helm with 2 titles each.
The baby lions will equally receive some individual distinctions with Daouda Amadou, Cameroon’s midfielder named “Man of the Match” for this finals while Steve Mvoue will be crowned player of the tournament.
The next edition will be held in Morocco in 2021.
Total 2019 AFCON U-17, Tanzania: Can Guinea outplay Cameroon in AFCON final?
The Syli National of Guinea will face the indomitable lions of Cameroon in the finals of the 2019 edition of the U-17 AFCON at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam Tanzania.
The baby lions go in as favourites for this game, haven dominated Guinea in the group stages 2-0 at the Chamazie stadium.
Both teams have suffered age cheating suspicions but have kept a deaf ear to these allegations.
Tomorrow’s game will be a new game altogether and a possible trap for the indomitable lions if they sit back in an over confidence mood. Coach Libih Thomas, the Cameroonian tactician has advised caution
“Playing a final is another game. We have to remain concentrated and patient”, said coach Libih
The baby lions of Cameroon are the only team which hasn’t conceded any defeat in the tournament; the boys of Libih Thomas made it through to the finals with 2 wins against Guinea and Morocco and a draw in the group stages (nil score versus Senegal), crossing through the semi finals by beating Angola 4-3 on penalty kicks. Cameroon can count on its solid defense which is the base of the team.
The absence of Fabrice Ndzie, team captain and central defender due to a red card in the semi finals has been a blow for the lions but the quality of his bench is as rich as that on the pitch.
Guinea has grown from strength to strength and build up their confidence game after game. The quality of the players, the fitness and confidence instilled by victories over Senegal and Morocco in the group stages and over Nigeria in the semi finals has completely transformed a Guinean side which easily allies athletic strength and individual technique.
Men to Watch
The indomitable lions play as a bloc team where collective play primes over individual actions. Steve Mvoue and Lionel Wamba will be the offensive bullets while Saidou Alioum Moubarak and Ismaila Seidou will make use of their pace on the wings.
The Guineans have individual techniques with the capacity of taking initiatives without fear and eyes will be turned towards Agassime Bah, the captain and main brain of the Guinean attack line, playing alongside Aboubakar Conte who has the necessary pace and dribbles while Momo Faye’s job remains putting the ball into the back of the net. All these regulated in the midfield by Ibrahim Fofana.
Kick Off time: 16:00 Local time, venue: National Stadium, Dar es Salaam
TOTAL 2019 U-17 AFCON : “Age cheating” suspicions greases tournament
The curtains of the 2019 edition of the U-17 AFCON will be drawn on Sunday 28th April 2019 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam with the finals pitting Guinea vs Cameroon. The tournament, brilliantly organised by CAF and hosted by Tanzania has been marked by a number of age cheating accusations by some losing teams with accusing fingers being pointed on the two finalists – Cameroon and Guinea.
Fouzi Lekjaa, the Moroccan FA boss vehemently attacked CAF after the defeat of Morocco lost to Cameroon (2-1). The CAF Executive Member denounced a fraud on the age of players, including those of the Indomitable Lions. The Cameroon FA (Fecafoot) didn’t waste time to respond to the FRMF boss describing him as a “a poor loser”.
Senegal will fall to Guinea 2-1 in Chamaze and the Senegalese FA will file an accusation to CAF against 2 Guinean players ( Aboubakar Conte and Ahmed Tidiane Keita) accused of haven changed their ages to be eligible for this tournament.
“Cases of doubled identity are punishable so let the authorities make a decision for the image of African football” said Coach Daff after Senegal failed to qualify for the semi finals of the AFCON.
CAF will reject Senegal’s plea but the latter insists to take the matter to CAS if CAF doesn’t kickoff Guinea from the AFCON.
The Guinea FA has denied any wrongdoings through a memo sent to the Secretary General of CAF.
In the continuation of the age sage discussion,Coach Libih Thomas of Cameroon will finally come out of his reserve to defend his boys and lament on the lack of knowledge of the morphology of Cameroonians.
“Anyone who knows the history of our Country’s football will know Cameroonians are very huge and physical by nature, why are our kids punished because of nature?” questioned the former Cameroonian international.”
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Friday 27th April 2019 made a formal complaint to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) about age cheating by Guinea, after the losing 10-9 on penalties at the semi finals of the ongoing U17 AFCON.
Age cheating has become subject for debate in youth football in Africa as players are now subjected to the MRI test which remains inaccurate and subjective. After haven passed the test on previous occasions, 3 Cameroonians, 2 Tanzanians and 1 Guinean were sidelined before the tournament kickoff on Sunday 14th April 2019.
Africa is a continent with a varied geography and ecosystem. This has an impact on the morphology of its individuals who grow under different environmental conditions and under different diets. The end result would be difference in morphology and physical strength/fitness.
CAF should give more attention on the issue given the fact that after each defeat, the losers automatically accuse the winners of age cheating
