Cameroon International, Andre Onana has accepted responsibility for Ajax’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in a group D Match day 5 encounter of the champions league at Afield on Tuesday night.
The Cameroon goalkeeper who was handed a fifth appearance in the Champions League this season, made a costly error which allowed the English champions, Liverpool clinch a place at the round of 16.
The 24 year-old goalkeeper allowed a cross from Merseyside defender, Neco William to reach Curtis Jones who scored the game’s only goal.
After the game, Onana however accepted his mistake for his side’s disappointing defeat.
“I am not the best, mistakes can happen to anyone. It is different for me but I have to take it. It is part of life and it is part of football that is what we train for”, Onana told the club’s website.
“Sometimes you make mistakes, sometimes not, I am totally responsible for the loss of today. I have to accept the reality, because of me we didn’t draw and we didn’t win.
“I am here to make saves not to make mistakes and I have to be very critical of myself. I have done a lot of good things in the past so I have to push harder.
“I have to keep my head up and then we will see what is going to happen. We played good. We had so many chances. I like the way the players were fighting. We had more possession.
“We had so many chances but we were unlucky we didn’t score today and that’s football”, he added.
The defeat puts the Dutch champions on the third spot in group D with 7 points in five matches.
However, the four time champions league winners could still make it to the last 16 if they win last season’s quarter finalists, Atlanta at the Johan Cruyff Arena on December 9, 2020.
Andre Onana has made 15 appearances for Ajax this season in all competitions and have kept six clean sheets, none in the Champions League so far.
