Javi Martinez wrote more UEFA Super Cup history for Bayern Munich on Thursday as his header in extra time sealed a 2-1 win over Sevilla in Budapest.
Having equalised with a crucial 120th-minute goal seven years ago when Bayern won the 2013 Super Cup on penalties against Chelsea, Martinez struck on 104 minutes at the Puskas Arena to hand the Champions League winners’ a fourth title in 2020.
After Lucas Ocampos converted an early penalty for Sevilla, Leon Goretzka equalised for Bayern, who had two second-half goals disallowed before substitute Martinez, 32, struck.
Having replaced Goretzka on 99 minutes, it was Martinez – linked to a return to Spain after losing a first-team place under Hansi Flick – whose header extends Bayern’s winning streak to 23 games dating back to February.
Bayern can win a fifth title this year next Wednesday when they host Borussia Dortmund in Munich for the German Super Cup.
There were a smattering of travelling Bayern and Sevilla fans among the 15,500 crowd in Budapest as both clubs played for the first time in front of spectators since the Covid-19 pandemic first hit Europe in March.
Champions League winners Bayern fell behind for the first time this season on 14 minutes when the VAR judged David Alaba had fouled Ivan Rakitic in the area and Ocampos converted Sevilla’s penalty.
Alaba was booked for the challenge, but replays showed Rakitic seemed to run into the Austrian defender.
There were nervous glances in the Germans’ ranks, especially when defender Benjamin Pavard and Thomas Mueller both missed chances.
Goretzka got Bayern back on level terms when Mueller and Robert Lewandowski combined in the area for the midfielder to smash home the equaliser with 34 minutes gone.
It stayed 1-1 at the break, but Bayern turned up the heat on the Europa League holders.
Just six minutes after the break, Lewandowski had the ball in the net after being set up by Thomas Mueller, but the VAR spotted the Poland striker was just the length a of a boot offside.
Then with an hour gone, Bayern winger Leroy Sane was left frustrated after his shot powered past Sevilla’s Moroccan goalkeeper Bono, but the VAR spotted Lewandowski had the lightest of touches on a Sevilla defender in the build up.
Bayern maintained the pressre, but with the 90 minutes almost up Manuel Neuer underlined his status as one of the world’s best goalkeepers with a finger-tip save to deny Youssef En-Nesyri after Sevilla attacked from the edge of their own penalty area.
Sevilla made a great start to extra-time with Bayern in all sorts of trouble, as Ocampos had a shot blocked while En-Nesyri’s shot clipped the post after crashing off Neuer’s leg.
However, the scene was set for Martinez, a veteran of the side which won the 2013 Champions League final in London, to add to his chapter in Bayern’s folklore.

Premier League: Matip played the entire match for Liverpool in their 2-2 draw against Everton.
Cameroon international Joel Matip played the entire match for Liverpool in their 2-2 draw against Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the season.
Matip, who has been out of action since June due to injury was selected by Klopp in their match day 5 fixture against Everton, after the “Reds” were punished 7-2 by Aston Villa two weeks ago.
Goals from Mane, fit again after recovering from COVID-19 and Salah were canceled out by Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Liverpool were denied a late winner to Jordan Henderson after Mane was ruled to be fractionally offside by VAR.
It should be noted that, Virgil Van Dijk was hobbled off after a collision with Everton’s goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford.
The game however, ended 2-2 with Joel Matip playing the entire game and with the injury of Van Dijk, the former Shalke 04 defender will be sure to lead the back line for Liverpool in their upcoming matches.
Modric baffled by criticism of Zidane and compares the boss to Ferguson & Wenger
Luka Modric insists Zinedine Zidane deserves to be ‘untouchable’ and believes the manager can be Real Madrid’s Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger.
Zidane has had even more success as a manager than he did as a Real player, winning 11 trophies including two LaLiga titles and three Champions Leagues during two spells as coach.
Despite his impressive achievements, the Frenchman has faced criticism – most recently when Real were knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester City in August.
Modric says he cannot understand the question marks over Zidane’s credentials and feels he is often under appreciated by people in the Spanish media.
Real are not renowned for having managers who enjoy reigns as long as Ferguson at Manchester United or Wenger at Arsenal but Modric believes Zidane has shown he can break the trend.
‘Zizou is a top manager. What he has done with us over the years is unrepeatable,’ Modric told El Partidazo de Cope.
‘It gives me the feeling that people do not appreciate him as a coach, he is always questioned. He’s one of the best! I wish that all of the world saw him as untouchable at Madrid.
‘When you listen on TV or to the radio there are complaints and criticisms of Zidane. There are some criticisms that don’t even make sense. He’s a spectacular coach. The way he fits us is like a glove.
‘He is ideal for Real Madrid. Zidane could be like Ferguson or Wenger in England.’
Modric, who has spent the last eight years at the Bernabeu, has worked under six different managers including Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez.
Assessing his other mangers, the midfielder added: ‘Mourinho was key in my signing for Madrid. I am sorry I only worked with him for a year. I will always be grateful to Mourinho for taking me to Real Madrid. He is tough and strong, but he is honest and always tells the truth to your face.
‘Ancelotti is a spectacular coach. And even more as a person. We played very well with him. We had two spectacular years with him, winning the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, playing great football. I still talk to him from time to time.
‘Benitez hasn’t done well at Madrid but he’s a great coach. That’s football. Not every football coach arrives at a team and has success. I did not have any problem with him. The outside of the boot thing was something that happened in a training session, but it was nothing, we didn’t get on poorly.’
European Champions, Bayern Munich Signs Cameroon International Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
European champions, Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Indomitable Lions captain, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting on a one year deal.
The former Harmburger SV forward has been clubless since his contract with the French champions, Paris Saint Germain expired in August this year.
Earlier in the summer, the Parisians offered the former Stoke City forward a new one year deal, but the German-Cameroonian preferred to move to a familiar terrain to sign for German Giants, Bayern Munich as a free Agent to play as back up striker for Robert Lewandowsky.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has experience in the Bundersliga with Harmburger SV, FC Nurnberg, Maize 05, and Shalke 04.
Choupo-Moting is one of those players who led Paris Saint Germain to their first ever UEFA champions league final as he played a vital role in PSG’s 2-1 win over Atlanta in the Quarter finals of last season, scoring one and providing an assist in the process.
It should be noted that, the former Shalke 04 man informed indomitable lions coach, Antonio Conceicao that he will not be part of his team during the October international break because of his continuous search for a club.
The 31 year-old will put on the number 13 shirt for his new club, Bayern Munich.
