Onana Banned, Ondoa Without Club; Who Steps In As Lions First Choice keeper?

Two of Cameroon’s regular shot – stoppers (Onana and Ondoa) are facing difficult turn of events in their careers, with Fabrice Ondoa without a club, and Andre Onana, banned from football for twelve months.

On December 15, 2020, Belgian top tier side KV Oostende terminated the contract of Cameroonian goalkeeper, Joseph Fabrice Ondoa with immediate effect.

According to Jupiter Pro club, 2017 AFCON winner, Fabrice Ondoa organized a lockdown party in the middle of a Covid19 crisis.

Over two months later, Andre Onana, 24, was handed a 12 months suspension from football for failing a doping test, in the month of October, last year.

The two goalies are relatives and have accumulated over 62 caps with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

Now, the question of who carries on as first choice keeper, comes to book.

Cameroon has always been a footballing nation, never short of talents, let alone goalkeepers.

List of keepers that could step up; Simon Omossola, Haschou Kerrido, Dande Junior, Blondy Nna Nokeu, Anye Derrick and Epane Letizie.

– Simon Omossola (AS Vita Club – Congo)

At 22, the former Cotonsport man is the most likely to step in as first choice, given his smooth transition from the youth set-up’s to always being in-and-around Ondoa and Onana as the third choice goalie.

The net-minder has been called up nine times with the national team, and already made a debut against Rwanda, back in 2020.

Simon Omossola has been in impeccable form for club as well, as he has taken control as first choice from countryman Lukong Nelson.

Haschou Kerrido – (PWD – Cameroon)

Haschou Kerrido punches air after Cameroon qualifies for CHAN quarter final

Aged 26, Haschou Kerrido is one of the goalkeeper’s with vast experience in the land. He has played for Unisport, Astres, Dragon and currently for PWD of Bamenda. Haschou Kerrido has made nonsense of the logic that goalies must have a reasonable height, as he has covered that up with some insane reflexes.

Kerrido was first choice at the just ended African Nations Championship and was in CAF’s team of the group stage.
The den is not a new one to Kerrido, who has been called up twice with the Indomitable Lions; against Cape Verde and Rwanda, in the AFCON 2021 qualifiers.

Dande Junior (Apejes of Mfou – Cameroon)

Dande Junior

Young goalkeeper Dande Junior is another who has been around different national set-up’s for a while. Despite the 22-year-old yet to stamp his authority on any of the selections, his qualities are matched by few. A height of 1.90 helps the goalies course, plus, the fact that he was present at the 2019 Under-23 AFCON and the just ended African Nations Championship, as back up goalkeeper.

Blondy Nna Nokeu (Stoke City  – England, Championship)

Blondy Nna Nokeu, currently with the Stoke City reserves is another keeper who will be leaking his lips for the position. The shot stopper has been handed three call-ups by Antonio Conceicao; he made the bench in a friendly against Japan, and was left out of the squad in the double header against Mozambique, in last year’s AFCON qualifiers. Nokeu has played an accumulated 270 minutes in all Competitions with Stoke City this season.

Anye Derrick ( Cotonsport – Cameroon)

Despite not having started off the blocks for Cotonsport in the CAF Confederation Cup, Anye Derrick without a shadow of doubt remains an elite goalkeeper and a plus to any team. The former Union Sportive of Douala man went 12 games with a clean net in the last football campaign with Panthere Sportive.

Many cried fowl when Anye was left out of the just ended CHAN, given his exploits back in 2016 – in the same tourney with Cameroon.

– Epane Letizie (Stade Renard – Cameroon)

Stade Renard shot – stopper Epane Letizie was included in Ndtongou Mpile’s CHAN side, and was called up in all lists presented, from the build up to the tournament, to the final list. Epane has once been given a callup by Antonio Conceicao, and he remains a stable goalie that can always be called upon.

The battle to catch the eye is well on course, as all the above-mentioned goalies relish their chance.
