One goal in one year, can Conceição’s 11 forwards end goal drought?

The head coach of the Indomitable lions of Cameroon, Antonio Conceição recently published a list of 32 players that will begin camping ahead of their double header AFCON qualifiers against the OS Mambas of Mozambique.

The list constitutes 4 Goalkeepers, 10 defenders, 7 Midfielders and 11 forwards. The Portuguese tactician is seemingly prioritizing the attack line, as his side has repeatedly failed to find the back of the net in bigger occasions.

Antonio Conceição, head coach of the Indomitable lions of Cameroon

António Conceição da Silva Oliveira officially took over as the lion’s head coach on October 04, 2019. Since then, he has been in the dugouts for the five times African Champions in four official games.

Shockingly, the team has scored just once in those four outings. Moumi Ngamaleu’s 69th minute goal at the Stade Regional de Nyamirambo in Kigali on 17 November 2019, still stands as Cameroon’s only goal scored during Conceição’s one year, 23 days stay as head coach of the Indomitable lions.

Other games against Tunisia, Cape Verde and most recently against Japan, have all ended goalless. Though Conceição can also boast of not conceding a goal in over one year, there are doubts if his newly summoned 11 man Forward line can solve his side’s goal scoring “wahala”.

The Indomitable lions of Cameroon

The last time Cameroon scored more than one goal in a game, was during the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, in their last game against Nigeria, on July 06, 2019, with Stephane Bahoken and Clinton Njie on the score sheet. By then, the name Antonio Conceição was not known or heard anywhere near Cameroon.

Taking a closer look at Conceição’s newly summoned 11 man Forward, Eric Choupo, Sidiki Aboubakari, Toko Ekambi, Aboubakar Vincent, Zobo Stephane, Ngamaleu Moumi, Bahoken Stephane, Tabekou Serge, Clinton Njie, Ayuk Éric, and Christian Bassogog, many football pundits are still not convinced if Conceição will have a “killer”, amongst them.

Captain Choupo Moting recently completed a move to Bayern Munich. Though he has scored twice with the Bavarian giants, he is not a regular with the club. Karl Toko Ekambi seems to be in fine form with Olympic Lyonnais, but has always failed to deliver when the national team comes calling. Stephane Zobo is yet to make an impact at Toulouse, while the lone home based player, Aboubakari Sidiki recently left league one side, Union of Douala, for third tier side, international FC. The Most Valuable player of the 2017 AFCON, Christian Bassogog, is just returning to club duties and Clinton Njie, is yet to hit top gear with Dynamo Moscow.

Serge Tabekou and Ayuk Eric are yet to be familiar with the den, While the sixth top scorer in the history of the Cameroon national team, Vincent Aboubakar, is gradually picking steam with Besiktas. It is not a coincidence that Moumi Ngamaleu scored the lone goal of the Conceição’s reign and is still part of the squad.

With a solid Midfield and a reassuring defence, Conceição will have to now work on his attacking force, as he continues to look for a “Tueur”, “killer“, as in the words of coach Yves Clement Arroga.

The Indomitable lions will host Mozambique on November 12, before travelling to Maputo for a return leg, four days later. Conceição will be hoping that his 11 forwards repay the confidence he has given them, as he searches for his second goal and second win since he took over as coach of the Indomitable lions.

Mozambique vs Cameroon: Indomitable Lions extend unbeaten run to six matches under Antonio Conceicao.

Published

on

Cameroon’s indomitable lions have extended their undefeated streak under coach,  Antonio Conceicao as the Lions triumph over the Mambas 2-0 in Maputo,  Mozambique in the ongoing AFCON qualifiers.

Goals from Vincent Aboubakar and Serge Tabekou were enough to seal a 2-0 win for the Indomitable Lions.

The win for Cameroon extends the team’s unbeaten record to six matches since Antonio Conceicao took over from Clarence Seedorf some 13 months ago.

Antonio Conceicao

The indomitable lions of Cameroon have now scored seven goals in 6 matches and have conceded just one goal in the process.

It should be noted that the lions scored six goals in the Mozambique double header,  more than the number of goals the lions scored in their previous 8 matches including the four matches played in AFCON 2019.

With such improvement,  many say the era of Antonio Conceicao might bring some positives going in to the future.

Cameroon tops group F with 10 points after 4 games played and their next real test will be away to Cape Verde in March next year.
