The Governance Committee is one of CAF’s four independent bodies. It is made up of eminent jurists from the continent, recognized for their expertise and moral probity.
Convened by its President, Michel Kizito Brizoua-Bi, the meeting was aimed at carrying out the eligibility checks of candidates for the positions of CAF President and members of CAF Executive Committee.
Of the five candidates that stood for the position of CAF’s President, the outgoing president, Ahmad Ahmad was declared ineligible.
The files of Augustin Emmanuel Senghor, President of the Senegalese Football Federation and Jacques Bernard Daniel Anouma former President of the Ivorian Football Federation and Honorary President of the Ivorian Football Federation files were declared admissible.
However, those of Ahmed Yahya President of the Mauritanian Football Federation and Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe Club President of Mamelodi Sundowns FC still need additional checks.
Even though deemed admissible, the committee however considered that further checks are necessary before a final decision. To this end, a hearing of these candidates will be organized in Cairo on January 28, 2021.
Concerning candidates authorized to participate in the election of members of the Executive Committee, 13 members were declared eligible.
Meanwhile, the files of three candidatures were deemed admissible but the committee considered that further checks are necessary before a final decision is taken.
It is worth noting that eligibility check of files of candidates for the FIFA Council is underway at the level of FIFA bodies and the result will be communicated in due course.
However, CAF will elect for a four-year term the successor of Ahmad Ahmad at the 43rd Elective Ordinary General Assembly, scheduled for March 12, 2021 in Rabat, Morocco.
