This summer there were a lot of explanations as to why Cristiano Ronaldo ended his adventure at Real Madrid and chose to move to Juventus. One of the explanations was that the Spanish club had financial problems and, therefore, had to sell one of their best players.
However, Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has a different interpretation of the story. Balague says that Cristiano Ronaldo wanted a new contract with Real Madrid, even though he had just signed a new one. Florentino Perez agreed to this, as Ronaldo was one of the club’s biggest names.
However, when Perez told him he wanted to reduce the release clause of the Portuguese star, he did not take it very well. Julen Lopetegui had no idea why Ronaldo wanted to go away and there was no one at the club pushing him out. Ronaldo considered Perez’ move as a clear signal that Real Madrid doesn’t want him anymore and told Perez to find him a new club.
Back in October, Ronaldo was asked what was behind his decision to leave Real Madrid. “I could feel from the club, especially from the president, that they no longer considered me number one,” he told France Football.
Inter challenge Roma for Smalling
Inter are ready to make their own offer to Manchester United for Chris Smalling, as Roma are forced to stall by the takeover, but the asking price is over €20m.
The defender spent this season on loan at the Stadio Olimpico, with the Giallorossi paying a substantial percentage of his salary.
He has made it clear that he wants to continue his experience in Italy and even remained in the Peninsula for his summer vacation.
Roma had seen their €15m offer rejected, as Manchester United are holding out for at least €20m.
They probably will be able to increase it once Dan Friedkin completes the takeover of the club from James Pallotta later this month.
Meanwhile, La Gazzetta dello Sport claim Inter are ready to dive in and make their own proposal for Smalling.
The Nerazzurri already have a strong rapport with Manchester United following deals for Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

Man Utd name their price for Smalling with Roma ‘desperate’ to seal transfer
Manchester United will reportedly demand £20million for Chris Smalling with Roma desperate to seal a permanent deal for the defender.
Centre-half Smalling, 30, is back with United after his season-long loan deal with the Serie A side expired.
But Roma are keen to take him back to Italy after an impressive campaign with the player said to be interested in making the switch.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still a fan of the 31-cap England international, and United are seeking a swift resolution to his future, report The Sun.
Smalling has two years left on his £130,000-a-week Old Trafford deal, with Roma paying a significant portion of his wages during his time in the Italian capital.
And Smalling is reportedly willing to take a sizeable pay cut in order to seal a permanent switch.
Roma have so-far offered only £15million for Smalling, which United have rebuffed.
Solskjaer is keen to add another defender to his ranks, with Marcos Rojo looking likely to leave the club.
Smalling would be down the pecking order if he stayed at the club, with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof the first-choice pairing and Eric Bailly and Phil Jones the back-ups.
Rojo is reportedly attracting interest from across Europe after a proposed transfer to Everton collapsed last summer.
Smalling signed for United from Fulham 10 years ago and has made 323 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, winning two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup and the Europa League.
Lazio’s Ciro Immobile set to join an exclusive club as the highest-scoring player in Europe this season
In a decade dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the underrated Italian is near assured of winning the European Golden Shoe for the continent’s top scorer.
From Messi, to Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Braut Haaland, nobody in Europe has managed to keep pace with the Naples-born player.
Immobile overtook Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski with his 35th goal against Brescia midweek, and will close his campaign against Napoli on Saturday.
Juventus star Ronaldo, on 31 goals, is four behind before the Serie A champions’ final game against Roma in Turin, in which he may not even play with the Champions League looming.
It would not be the first time that 30-year-old Immobile has topped the Serie A goal-scoring charts, having won the ‘Capocannoniere’ twice before in 2014 and 2018.
But he would become just the third Italian winner of the European Golden Shoe after Roma’s Francesco Totti (26) in 2007 and Luca Toni for Fiorentina in 2006 (31).
Another two goals on Saturday would also see him surpass Gonzalo Higuain’s Serie A record of 36 goals, set playing for Napoli in the 2015-16 season.
“I am only sorry that I cannot celebrate these numbers with the fans,” said Immobile, nicknamed ‘King Ciro’ in the capital, but whose career before arriving in Rome had been erratic.
Success has not followed onto the national team, where he has scored ten goals in 39 games, taking the brunt of criticism after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Immobile started his career at Juventus, where he made just three appearances before a breakthrough loan season in 2011-2012 at Pescara where his 28 goals lifted the Serie B side into the top flight.
