YAOUNDE (Cameroon) – There was incredible drama at the Palais Polyvalent des Sports de Yaounde as teams in the West Division rivaled for glory in Day 2 of the BAL 2020 “Elite 16”. The home fans were in a delirium of joy after the hosts FAP bridged a 13 point gap to record a nail-biting 87-85 win over GSP of Algeria. Al Naser secured a second victory in Group A overpowering AS Nigelec 85-67 and heightening their chances of a semi-final ticket.
In Group B, AS Police continued their winning streak cruising past BC Mazembe 88-76 while ABC of Cote d’Ivoire stunned Gabonese outfit Manga BB 80-67.
Here are the top five players who put up enthralling performances in Day 2 games.
Ibrahima Haidara (As Police)
Haidara was again at the top of his game recording an unsurpassed 25 points and three rebounds as AS Police sealed a second win moving closer to the semis. His efficiency beyond the arc proved crucial as he homed 7 of his 11 three point attempts to inspire his side to a convincing victory
Timothy Kwaor (Nigelec)
Another day, another game and the same emphatic Timothy Kwaor. The 23-year-old picked up on Day 2 where he left off in Day 1 with an incredible 24 points. He’ll feel awful ending up on the losing side despite churning 3 of his 5 attempts on the charity line. He was unstoppable and will be keen on breathing the Niger franchise to their first win.
Engelbert Beleck (F.A.P)
The hosts owe their nerve-racking win against GSP to Beleck. The 21-year-old guard came off the bench to contribute 21 points and inspire FAP to a decisive first win. If on offense Beleck was a constant threat, he helped his side defensively picking up 2 rebounds as FAP stunned GSP.
Stephane Konate (A.B.C)
ABC badly needed a win and their captain rose up to the occasion. Konate netted a game-top 19 points with 8 rebounds. While Konate was entertaining, he created the chances for his mates providing 7 assists as two other ABC players Jordan Reed with 11 points and Abraham Sie with 14 points recorded double figures.
Michael Taylor (Al Naser)
Taylor started the game on the courtside but demonstrated magic once in action. He was a marvel to watch and marked his 21 minutes on the court with 24 points and 8 rebounds. He had a clean slate with his free throws, homing all 2 attempts and laying 2 assists as the Libyans picked up another win.
Day 3 of the Elite 16 will be fascinating with semi-final tickets up for grabs.
