The local Eagles of Mali have beaten Burkina Faso 1#0, in the second game of the 2020 African Nations Championship. The game was played at the yaounde Omnisport Stadium on Saturday evening.
Siaka Bagayoko’s 72nd minute header made the difference, as the Eagles of Mali register their first three points of the competition.
AS IT HAPPENED
Largely a quiet first segment from both sides, Mali dominated ball possession, but was always caught wanting going forward.
The rare chance of the first segment came at the 43rd minute, when Siaka Bagayoko’s long range free kick forced a fine save from goalkeeper Babayoure Sawadogo, but it would be a parity score that separates both sides at the break.
Upon resumption for the second half, both coaches effected a litany of substitutions. Moussa Ballo, and Moussa Kone all came in for the Eagles, while for Burkina Faso, it was Mohammed Watara, Clavert Jean and Hamed Belem, who came on, to replace Wendyam Yannick, pitriopa Clement and Abdoul Baguian.
More incursions from Mali paid off at the 72nd minute, when Siaka Bagayoko headed home from a delivery from Issaka Samaka, from a corner kick.
At one nil, Mali pressed harder for a second goal, but the Stallions had goalkeeper Babayoure Sawadogo to thank, as he stopped more casualty from coming their way.
With a 1#0 win, Mali moves joint top of Group A of the CHAN, with three points, same with host Cameroon who edged Zimbabwe by a similar margin, in the opening game.
It therefore sets an interesting round two games for Group A, as Mali plays Cameroon in the next round of games, while Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe who all suffered defeats, will go head to head.
Round two games in group A comes up on Wednesday January 20, 2021.
