Vardy rocks Arsenal as Leicester go fourth

Jamie Vardy came off the bench to seal Leicester’s late 1-0 win as spluttering Arsenal crashed to a third defeat in their last four Premier League games on Sunday.

Vardy was only fit enough for the bench after a calf injury, but Brendan Rodgers sent the Leicester striker on with 30 minutes left and he responded with his sixth goal of the season.

The 33-year-old has made a habit of tormenting Arsenal and has now scored 11 goals in 12 Premier League games against them.

Leicester climbed up to fourth place after ending a run of two successive league defeats.

Arsenal are languishing in 10th after a second consecutive league loss following their 1-0 defeat at Manchester City last weekend.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta will have been disappointed by his team’s lack of cutting edge.

The principle problem is a sudden dip in form for captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon forward is without a goal in his last five league games, although he did net against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday.

Aubameyang has scored just once in the league this season, hardly the kind of form Arteta would have hoped for after handing him a lucrative new contract in September.

Arsenal’s ability to challenge for a top four place rests on Aubameyang leading the charge and so far this term he has been a flop.

– Luiz blow –

Arteta handed a home debut to Thomas Partey as he recalled a host of first-team regulars following the victory in Vienna.

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno had played in Vienna and was at fault for the goal his side conceded.

The German looked shaky again and nearly gifted Leicester the lead inside the first two minutes.

Leno came dashing way off his line but his attempted clearance went straight to James Maddison and the midfielder’s 40-yard effort went just wide.

Alexandre Lacazette headed in from an Arsenal corner moments later, but the goal was disallowed for offside against Granit Xhaka.

Arsenal were on top and Bukayo Saka’s strike forced a good save from Kasper Schmeichel before Aubameyang headed over from Kieran Tierney’s cross.

Lacazette should have done better with a good chance from another Tierney cross before Saka shot into the side-netting.

Arsenal suffered a blow when David Luiz limped off early in the second half, with Maddison shooting over as Leicester tried to take advantage of any confusion in the rejigged Gunners rearguard.

Maddison went for another audacious effort from near the halfway line, but Leno scrambled back to spare his blushes.

Hector Bellerin, already shown a yellow card, was fortunate to escape a booking when he crunched into James Justin.

It was the kind of game crying out for the creativity of Mesut Ozil, the exiled playmaker left out of Arsenal’s Premier League squad this season.

Instead, Arteta sent on Nicolas Pepe midway through the half in a bid to perk Arsenal up.

Bellerin brought a good save from Schmeichel when he met Aubameyang’s cross with a powerful volley.

But Arsenal were hit with a sucker punch in the 80th minute.

Youri Tielemans’ ball over the top for Cengiz Under was perfectly weighted and the Turk squared across goal for Vardy to head into the empty net.

The announcement certainly has a lot to do with drugmaker Pfizer, whose coronavirus vaccine has shown it is more than 90% effective, according to the CNN — a much better than expected efficacy if the trend continues.

The interim analysis looked at the first 94 confirmed cases of Covid-19 among the more than 43,000 volunteers who got either two doses of the vaccine or a placebo. It found that fewer than 10% of infections were in participants who had been given the vaccine. More than 90% of the cases were in people who had been given a placebo.

Pochettino insists he has no hard feelings for Spurs or ‘good friend’ Mourinho

Published

on

Mauricio Pochettino has explained that he holds no animosity towards Tottenham after his sacking last year.

The Argentine was dismissed from his position as manager of the North London club in November 2019 following a poor run of results that saw the club sit 14th in the Premier League, just months after they lost the Champions League final against Liverpool.

Hours later, Spurs announced the signing of Jose Mourinho as the new boss after Pochettino’s five-and-a-half year reign.

The 48-year-old, who admitted he is ready to return to management, let on that he was upset following his exit from Tottenham but understood that a change may have been needed.

‘After one year now, I’m not going to say I was not disappointed,’ Pochettino told Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

‘I was a bit upset and was not happy when we left a club that you feel after five-and-a-half years the relationship is massive with the staff, players and of course the fans. I’m not going to lie.

‘But I understand football very well and the stadium maybe in our period, in the chapter, that maybe the club needed to change. But I’m not going to complain at the decision of the club.’

Mourinho, apart from a few hiccups, has overseen an exciting season so far for the club as they sit third in the Premier League table as the highest scorers in the top flight.

Pochettino added that he had a very strong relationship with his successor and labelled him a ‘good friend’.

‘What I can do is support because I will still have a very good relationship (with the club) and the guy who replaced me was a good friend,’ he added.

‘He always treated me very good when I was at Espanyol and he was at Real Madrid. And I always remember going to watch a Champions League game of his at Ajax and we chatted before the match.

‘Someone had to tell him ‘Jose, we need to go out to the match the game is starting’. And he said, ‘Sorry, sorry’.

‘I love Tottenham and I know Jose and I want then best for him and the best way is (for him) to try to win. We missed (the chance) to win a title. That would have put the cherry on the cake.’

Following his departure from Spurs, Pochettino has been linked with a number of European giants, with Real Madrid among those clubs reportedly eyeing up the Argentine boss.

He has also been linked with Manchester United on several occasions with constant pressure looming over current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Pochettino revealed that he and his backroom staff are still working away to find their next opportunity as he expressed his desire to return to the sidelines.

‘I am always ready to go again and be involved in the game,’ Pochettino said. ‘It’s not stress when you are working, it’s not stress going into the training round to prepare the match and to compete.

‘I hope to go back soon so we can start again to work. I am looking forward to being back in the game. I love this game but it’s difficult. We are inside and working on doing things. That’s the reality.’
