Delap heads to Forest in club-record £50m deal as Chelsea cash in on striker

Nottingham Forest have moved to reshape their attack with a statement signing, agreeing a deal worth in the region of £50m to prise Liam Delap away from Chelsea. It is the most expensive arrival in the club’s history.

The 23-year-old should put pen to paper on a long-term deal with Forest once his medical is passed in the coming days, ending a curious, injury-hit spell in west London after just a single full season there.

A gamble Chelsea were willing to take

Delap’s move to Stamford Bridge arrived only a year ago, when Chelsea beat Manchester United and Everton to his signature in a £30m switch from Ipswich Town. The expectation, after he had struck 12 goals during the Tractor Boys’ top-flight climb, was of a striker ready to make the step up.

Instead, the campaign unravelled. A shoulder problem and then a hamstring complaint repeatedly sidelined him, and he managed barely a handful of appearances — a solitary Premier League goal summed up a frustrating term. With the club trimming its squad and looking to balance the books, he was promptly made available this summer, and Forest have pounced on the chance to give him a fresh start.

A striker to lead the line

The addition gives Forest a new focal point and genuine competition in attack. Chris Wood and Igor Jesus were both left empty-handed in Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Leeds in their opening fixture, so the arrivals department has moved to hand the dugout another option up front.

Delap’s pedigree is considerable. A product of Derby County’s academy, he joined Manchester City in 2019 and was part of the side crowned FA Youth Cup winners the following season. His goalscoring was prolific at reserve level — 24 in 20 matches in the 2020-21 Premier League 2 title campaign — and he marked his senior debut with a strike in a Carabao Cup win over Bournemouth in September 2020, days before making his league bow in a heavy defeat at Leicester.

Injuries limited his path at the Etihad, and loan stretches at second-tier Stoke, Preston and Hull followed between 2022 and 2024, before City cashed in. A £20m move to Ipswich gave him the platform he craved, and 12 goals in 37 league games for the newly promoted side underlined his ability to perform at the top level.

Forest’s summer of upheaval

The outlay underlines how Forest are reinvesting after a busy window. They have already landed defender Ousmane Diomande from Sporting for £34m and added midfielder Xaver Schlager and goalkeeper Steve Benda on free transfers, and the Delap deal follows the record sale of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for £116m and Taiwo Awoniyi’s £9m switch to Coventry.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have strengthened their own forward ranks this summer — Emmanuel Emegha arrived from Strasbourg and Danny Welbeck crossed from Brighton — so the Stamford Bridge exit suits both parties. For Forest, the hope is that a change of scenery and a clean bill of health finally allow Delap to deliver on the promise that first marked him out as one of English football’s most exciting young forwards.
