Michigan State set for Northwestern in Big Ten opener

Michigan State men’s soccer was set to open Big Ten play against Northwestern at DeMartin Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The Spartans entered the fixture after suffering their first loss of the season, a 3-1 defeat to No. 19 Kansas City on Sept. 11. Michigan State had started the campaign 4-0 in August and was looking to recover from an 0-1-1 record in September.

Northwestern arrived in East Lansing with a 3-2-1 record and momentum from a 4-0 win over No. 2 Maryland. Peter Riesz, Italo Addimandi, Andrew Millar, and Ethan Nakolo scored in that result.

Michigan State held a 35-10-16 advantage in the all-time series and had won three of the previous six meetings. The Spartans were also ranked No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches poll entering the match.
