The Clearing of the Decks: United Draw a Line Under Casemiro Era as Mainoo and Maguire Handed Fresh Deals

Casemiro’s Old Trafford Exit Confirmed as United Tie Down Mainoo and Maguire

There was never really going to be a fairytale ending. When Casemiro confirmed earlier this year that he would be leaving Manchester United when his contract expires this summer, it felt less like a surprise announcement and more like the formal close of a chapter everyone had quietly agreed was finished.

Now, the final detail has been ironed out. According to the Manchester Evening News, United and the Brazilian midfielder reached an agreement back in January to waive a clause in his contract that would have automatically triggered a new deal had he started 35 or more Premier League games this season. With that clause gone, Casemiro is free to play in every remaining match without either side fretting over the small print.

It is, in its own way, a quietly dignified arrangement. United told him early in the season that they would not be renewing his deal. He chose to make it public in the new year, the club agreed to that decision, and the two parties have handled the transition without any apparent acrimony. Fabrizio Romano has been clear there is no prospect of a reversal. The 34-year-old will need to find his next club elsewhere, and given his experience and reputation, options will not be hard to come by. Borussia Dortmund are reportedly still interested in Jadon Sancho, whose own future is equally settled, just not in the direction he might have hoped. Romano described United’s position plainly: the Sancho story, as far as the club is concerned, is over. Whether he ends up back in Germany or takes the money on offer from Italy or Saudi Arabia remains to be seen.

But not everything at Old Trafford is about departures. The more encouraging news comes in the form of two contracts that are, according to Romano, almost done.

Harry Maguire is set to sign a new deal running until 2027, with the option of a further year beyond that. Whatever one thinks of his turbulent years as captain, Maguire has quietly rebuilt his standing at the club this season, and the extension reflects that. More significant still is the news around Kobbie Mainoo. United are in the final stages of tying down the young midfielder to a five-year contract through to June 2031. An improved salary and a guaranteed central role are part of the package, and both sides are said to be optimistic that everything will be wrapped up before the season ends.

United’s eagerness to secure Mainoo speaks for itself. At 19, he is exactly the kind of player the club needs to build around, and the contrast with Casemiro’s exit could hardly be more pointed. One era drawing quietly to a close, another being locked in with intent.

So United head into the summer with some clarity, at least. Casemiro leaves with his head held reasonably high. Mainoo and Maguire stay. And Sancho, once again, must find a new home.
