Senegal Starts Title Defense with Dominant Win over Gambia

The defending champions Senegal made a statement of intent by thrashing Gambia 3-0 in their opening Group C match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.

Lamine Camara, a 22-year-old forward, scored twice for Senegal, after Gueye had opened scores to seal a convincing victory.

Senegal, who are led by coach Aliou Cissé, are one of the favourites to win the tournament again this year. They have a strong squad with a mix of experience and youth, and they showed on Monday that they are ready to defend their title.

Pape Gueye opened the scoring for Senegal in the 4th minute, firing past Gambian goalkeeper Modou Jobe.

Camara doubled Senegal’s lead in the 43rd minute, firing a low shot from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom corner.

Camara completed his brace in the 71st minute, heading home a cross from Moussa Niakhaté.

Gambia, who reached the quarterfinals of the 2023 tournament, created some chances but were unable to find a way past Senegal’s defense.

Senegal’s win puts them top of Group C, ahead of Guinea-Bissau and Malawi. They will next face Guinea-Bissau on Friday.

The victory was a welcome boost for Senegal, who have been under pressure to defend their title. The Teranga Lions will face the indomitable lions of Cameroon in their next game. An encounter
