Cape Verde Sharks shock Mozambique, book spot in last 16

Cape Verde made history on Friday, becoming the first team to qualify for the knockout stages of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations. The Sharks defeated Mozambique 3-0 in their second group match to top the group and secure their spot in the last 16.

Cape Verde started the match on the front foot and took the lead in the 20th minute through a goal from Júlio Tavares. The Sharks doubled their advantage in the 38th minute through a strike from Carlos Mane. Tavares then completed his brace in the 85th minute to seal the victory.

The win was a major upset for Mozambique, who were expected to be a tough opponent. Cape Verde’s victory is a sign that they are a team to be reckoned with at this year’s tournament.

“This is a great achievement for our country,” said Cape Verde coach Rui Aguas. “We have worked hard for this and we are very proud of our players. We are now focused on the next match and we will be looking to continue our good form.”

The Sharks will now face the second-placed team from Group C in the round of 16. They will be hoping to continue their impressive form and reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
