Real Madrid are within touching distance of the most expensive signing in their history, with RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande poised to become the headline act of a summer of lavish spending at the Bernabéu. Negotiations between the two clubs have resumed and are said to be entering their final phase, raising the prospect of the Ivorian being unveiled at Valdebebas before the week is out. The sums involved explain the sense of occasion. Real will commit €130m in fixed fees, with up to €10m more available in add-ons — enough to make Diomande the most expensive arrival in the club’s history, clear of the €120m lavished on Eden Hazard in 2019 and the €110m-plus package that took Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund. Hazard’s move, once seen as a watershed, was wrecked by injuries; Bellingham became the face of a new Madrid. Diomande will be expected to follow the second path, not the first.

For a club that has already completed five other signings this window, it amounts to a serious statement of intent. Nothing has been signed as yet — Diomande trained with his Leipzig team-mates on Wednesday — but Real’s expectation is that he will be training in the Spanish capital before the current week ends, with the paperwork expected to follow once the final details are thrashed out.

Rodri waits in the wings

The forward’s arrival is also expected to unlock the next chapter of Madrid’s summer. Their long-running interest in Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been placed on hold while the Diomande deal is completed, and with that objective close to being achieved, attention will swiftly turn back to the Spain international and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.
