Jean-Philippe Mateta’s turbulent relationship with Crystal Palace has taken another sharp turn, with the France international formally contesting the validity of the final ten months of his deal at Selhurst Park and lodging his case with world football’s governing body.
The 29-year-old, who started Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League defeat at Everton, is arguing that the last portion of a contract due to run until June 2027 should be declared void. According to sources reported by BBC Sport, Mateta has pressed the matter with FIFA after a Premier League tribunal heard an initial challenge, with the league process understood to have concluded that the agreement remains binding even though no definitive verdict has been officially confirmed.
What is Mateta claiming?
The crux of the dispute lies in how the striker’s current terms came to be extended. Mateta arrived in south London in 2021 on an 18-month loan from Mainz 05 before the move was made permanent in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year deal that carried the option of a further 12 months. Palace triggered that clause in 2024, which is how the forward’s stay in SE25 currently runs to the end of next season.
It is that optional extra year Mateta now contends should be invalid. Had he succeeded, the door could have opened for him to walk away as a free agent well before his current arrangement naturally lapses — a prospect that would have landed an unwelcome decision at the club’s door with the new campaign barely underway. The case has now been referred upward, though FIFA is said to have ruled this week that overriding the contract falls outside its remit, leaving the matter in limbo.
The back-story to a bitter standoff
Palace pairing Mateta with the opening weekend of the season feels apt, because few players have packed quite so much into the past 12 months. Once transformed from a sluggish oddity into one of the division’s more dependable front men under former boss Oliver Glasner, he has scored 67 goals for the club and delivered in the FA Cup and Conference League triumphs that marked the most decorated spell in Palace’s history.
His trademark corner-flag “boom” celebration has made him a cult figure, while a place in France’s World Cup squad capped his international rise. Yet he was pushing to leave as recently as January, coming close to joining AC Milan before the switch collapsed over a knee problem. Palace responded by sanctioning a club-record move for Jorgen Strand Larsen, at up to £48m, as a potential successor, and Mateta has since played through a curious last year in which he has been both barracked and cheered by the Selhurst faithful. He ended last term with 16 goals across all competitions.
With Pierre Sage’s reign opening with defeat, an injured Ismaila Sarr on the sidelines and Chadi Riad carried off with a serious knee issue, the Mateta saga is the last thing a reeling Palace needed. Whoever is in the right on the paperwork, this standoff risks leaving a stain on the celebrated career of a striker the club can least afford to lose — and, rather than marking the start of a bright new era, it threatens to define the season in all the wrong ways.
