Algeria’s AFCON nightmare continues as they are eliminated by Mauritania

In a stunning upset, Algeria were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations by Mauritania on Tuesday, while Angola finished top of Group D with a 2-0 win over Burkina Faso.

Algeria needed only a draw to advance as one of the best third-placed teams, but they were stunned by an early goal from Yali Dellahi.

Djilali Belmadi’s side dominated possession for much of the match, but they were unable to find an equaliser and were eliminated from the tournament.

Mauritania, meanwhile, celebrated their first ever win at the Africa Cup of Nations and qualified for the knockout stages for the first time.

In the other Group D match, Angola took advantage of a slugglish Burkina Faso to win 2-0.

Mabululu scored the first goal for Angola in the 25th minute, and Zini added a second in the second minute of added time.

The result means that Angola finish top of the group with seven points, while Burkina Faso are second with four points.
