AFCON 2023 Shadowed by Tragedy: Journalist Bus Crash in Ivory Coast

By Lawrence Nkede, Football Writer and Sports Pundit

The joyous rhythm of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire was abruptly dampened in the early hours of Wednesday, January 24th, 2024, as a bus carrying journalists returning from Yamoussoukro to Abidjan met with a serious accident.

According to local media reports, the bus, chartered by the AFCON Organizing Committee (Cocan), inexplicably veered off the road at high speed, crashing into the wall of a warehouse. The impact sent shockwaves through the vehicle, leaving a trail of injuries in its wake. The bus conductor bore the brunt of the collision, requiring a critical extraction maneuver due to a trapped foot. The driver, too, sustained significant injuries.

While most fortunate to emerge with minor abrasions, the gravity of the situation became apparent with the sight of two individuals – the driver and the conductor – battling for their health. Cocan quickly released a statement expressing profound regret for the unfortunate incident, acknowledging the seriousness of the injuries and assuring all affected journalists of comprehensive support.

“We have two seriously injured, the driver and the conductor,” Cocan declared in their official communication, outlining the swift transfer of the injured to the University Hospital Center (CHU) in Treichville for immediate medical attention. The press service further stated continued cooperation with medical authorities to closely monitor their condition.

This accident throws a wrench into the celebratory atmosphere of AFCON 2023, casting a shadow on the tournament’s festivities. Yet, amidst the concern, it’s crucial to recognize the swift and efficient response of rescuers and medical personnel who acted as pillars of strength during this harrowing event. Their dedication and expertise offer a glimmer of hope in the face of adversity.

As the situation unfolds, Cocan has pledged to provide regular updates, keeping everyone informed about the well-being of injured colleagues.

We send our unwavering support to the injured individuals and pray for their speedy and complete recovery.
